Sick with a cold and miserable :(

I've been home sick with a cold - my head feels like it is under water and my chest is congested. I called my doctor today and he said I can take Tylenol if needed, but I'm afraid to now after seeing the report on the news about it causing ADHD. He also said I can take Robitussin DM if needed to help with the cough and congestion.

Has anyone here had to deal with a cold while pregnant?

Right now, I'm holed up on my room with a vaporizer on trying to avoid taking meds, but I might break down tonight and take something.

On another note, I'm officially in my 2nd trimester and so far my baby orange is doing great but is probably bouncing around in there from all of the coughing I've been doing the last few days.

Re: Sick with a cold and miserable :(

  • I'm sorry you aren't feeling well, I hope you feel better! And congrats on 2nd tri! :)

As far as taking Tylenol, long story short, don't take any stock in what the news said. There's a phrase in psychology called "correlation does not equal causation" meaning they probably noticed an increase of Tylenol use in pregnant women along with an increase in ADHD (correlation), but they have NO proof that Tylenol is the cause. It could be a million other factors.

For colds, I usually just up my water intake and rest as much as possible. I also take EmergenC, one packet a day, which my doctor ok'd.

  • I've been taking Oscillococcinum, a homeopathic treatment my midwife suggested. I do think it's helped shorten the life of my cold. I started out with body aches and fatigue last Wednesday and after a day of the Oscillococcinum I was feeling better. Sunday I think I got hit with a different bug and felt like I was getting a sinus infection, but I used the neti pot + Oscillococcinum and I'm feeling much better today. Sorry you're having to deal with a cold though, it's really a lot worse without ibuprofen/tylenol or day/nyquil. Feel better soon!

  • Yea, it sucks...it sucks to be sick when you're not pregnant but at least you can take meds without worrying about someone else growing inside of you. I have heavy duty meds from Spain but because it's pharmaceutical grade stuff, I can't take it. Doctor said I can come see him tomorrow if need be, otherwise just check in and let him know how I'm feeling.
  • I was sick for two weeks. I finally started feeling better and DH got sick, now I'm starting to get a soar throat AGAIN! Not cool. I tool Tylenol once or twice but I watched that report too and now I'm freaking out about it. I won't be doing that again. Gargling with salt water and a humidifier seemed to help me the most.

  • I just got over a two week cold not too long ago. It was miserable. I took Tylenol as needed but tried to stay away from it until things got really bad. I run a humidifier every night anyways so I continued that and used breathe right strips. I also used saline spray and honestly the only thing that gave me any relief was keeping on my feet and busy.

Sorry that got long. Eventually I had to go on antibiotics to kick whatever it was out. I wasn't happy about having to take them but I knew I couldn't go on the way I was and I wasn't getting any better on my own. I hope you feel better soon!

  • Oh my doctor said it was okay to take plain Sudafed and Tylenol Sinus but I stayed away from them. My family doctor said Benadryl was ok too so I took that as needed to help me sleep although it really didn't help the congestion.

  • Sorry you're not feeling well. I'm just getting over a bad cold too. Breathe right strips and cough drops were my saving grace. Also lots of water, rest and decaf black tea with honey too. Over a week later and I think it's almost gone. Hang tight and rest up. Hope you feel better soon.

  • I just broke down and took Tylenol. It's the lowest dose available but I couldn't take the pain in my head anymore....any time I cough or move, I feel like I'm being punched in the head :(

I stayed home again today from work too....can't remember the last time I've had to stay home for more than one day....hopefully I start to feel better soon....
