Painting the entire inside of a house!

If you had to paint your entire house (inside) from top to bottom where would you start choosing a color plan?

1. Choose a neutral base color for things like hallways, entryways, staircases. *We chose Buckweat by Sherwin Williams.

2. Choose your furniture, bedding, pillows, etc before choosing paint for other rooms. Or at least look at a paint catalog that has ideas for each room in it. Pinterest is good to get ideas also.

3. Choose colors for each room based on what you chose to put in it.

I hired someone to paint the entire lower level of my house before I moved back in it and then based decor on the colors. My favorite colors are calming - blue, sage green, brown, darker tan. If you already have your decor that you like, base it off that. Darker colors make the room smaller.

I go with neutrals and maybe an accent wall. By the time I finish I will have painted the entire house. Right now I'm working on the downstairs where I"m going with a light tan and light grey. I will have one 'pop' accent wall which is the fireplace wall and that will probably be a dark brown. I like to keep it neutral because then I can decorate however I want and not have to repaint.

Many hardware stores and paint stores have booklets available that show a variety of shades that compliment each other. You can pick one of them that fits your taste and decide what rooms will be what color. What's nice with that is that when you have doors open the colors won't clash with each other.

we painted my music room, DD's room, and office by ourselves. One of the walls in my music room is a metallic blue color with the other walls lilac. The office DH did, he painted the top half of all walls brown and the bottom half grey with a nice, clean line separating the 2 colors. DD's accent wall is pink with a cherry blossom tree decal and the remaining rooms are purple. We want to do her bathroom next with a ocean theme.

I haven't done this but I have a couple friends who are in the throes of decorating. They tell me to make sure the colors flow from one room to the next - so if you're standing in Room A and can see the colors in Room B, make sure the colors in Room B flow naturally with the colors and decor in Room A. They can totally be different, but you want to make sure that if you can see both rooms at the same time it's not a trainwreck when the color schemes are put together.

Makes sense to me.

We bought a house last year and did this. We chose a neutral color for pretty much the entire house. We have lots of white trim and crown molding that pops. And we bring in color with area rugs, and wall decor.

We bought lots of little cans of Benjamin Moore paints in various shades of beige and put it on the walls. The one thing that we found out (and is definitely true!) is that small swatches painted on the wall are no match for a full wall being painted. We HATED the color we chose when we painted a small area. When I went back to the store to pick out more samples, the guy told us to paint the entire wall and when we did, we loved it. We used it for the entire house.

My DH painted our whole house recently, a couple of rooms each weekend and recently did all the trimmings. It was a big job!

When picking the colors, I looked at magazines for ideas and then bought the little cans (we used Bahr) painted a sample on the wall to see if we liked it. It's about personal preference but I like peachy/country colors rather than plain white.

When we painted the first floor of our place before moving in, we looked at paint swatches and pictures in magazines. I didn't go with super-neutral colors, only because I figured the perk of living in my own place and not an apartment was not having beige walls. So my kitchen is purple, our dining area is an orange-ish color called "Chocolate Turtle" (which I honestly picked 50% because of the name) and the living room is a blue-ish purple. We haven't done our bedroom and bathroom yet, but they will be Liberty blue and Firecracker red/pink respectively.

We chose pretty neutral colors for the whole house because we don't plan on living here much longer. I tend to go towards grays.

I'm going through this dilemma right now too! I've been pinning things on Pinterest and bringing home color chips from the store to hang up and see how I like them after a couple of days. For me, I seemed to be drawn to colors that were on the same placement on the paint strips (I think they're all like the 3rd from the top), because I don't like having one really dark room (unless it's like a study or something that is separated from most other rooms) and a bunch of really light rooms.

There is also a site called ChipIt which allows you to upload a photo or something that you really like and it will create a color scheme for you based on those colors.

I've also heard the advice that you should keep "like" rooms "like". So for example, all your hallways/entryway one color, all your bathrooms in a similar tone, etc. I don't know how true this is, but something to consider.

Our guest room is going to be a blue/green color, my home office a soft green, our den a heather gray, our Master bedroom a light gray, our guest bathroom and laundry room and grayish-purple. The previous owners had already painted the main living areas a blue-gray color (not exactly the shade I would have chosen but close enough that I'm not going to bother changing it for now).
