Birthday Parties for the 5 year old crowd

DD's birthday is next month.  We're planning a small Frozen themed party at our house.  It will mostly be family, but she is inviting a few friends.  There will probably be 6 kids there.  How many games should I plan?  Right now I'm planning a pinata, pin the nose on Olaf and am planning an indoor snowball toss (2 teams, 2 colored buckets in the middle; kids through styrofoam balls into buckets and bucket with the most wins).  Is that enough?

Re: Birthday Parties for the 5 year old crowd

  • The past few 5 yo parties I attended had no organized games, and the kids had a ball. I think what you have planned is fine.

  • I think that's enough.  I had 3 planned activities for the party we hosted at our house....pin the bat signal on batman, a superhero training course (basically, they jumped over something then punched down a building of fake bricks), and a make your own mask craft.  They played for a bit at the beginning and end of the party, then dinner/cake/presents took up the rest of teh time!

  • I just had a home party for my 5 yo son and asked about it a few weeks ago on here- I got some great feedback! You may enjoy scrolling to look at the responses.

We did a piñata, pin the tail, and a scavenger hunt and for us - it was more than enough. We also did one quick round of musical chairs and the kids enjoyed it but when I asked if they wanted to do it again they said they just wanted to play together. All the kids really wanted to do was be together! Plus we ate, sang, had cake, opened presents which takes time too. Have fun and be prepared for the craziness of 5 yr. olds! I wasn't ready for all the commotion and excitement! Fun!!!
  • I've only planned a craft for the last three home parties we've had - ages 4, 6 and 7. The rest of the time the kids just played together. What you have planned is more than enough. Kids don't get bored when they have each other to play with. :-)

  • We are having a froze party in a few months too! I was thinking of doing a snowball toss too.

My thoughts are: have a few activities available and see how it goes. For dd's 4th and 5th bday I had a couple activities but they were content to play on their own.

For her 4th I had a make your own necklace activity and a scavenger hint. The kids got bored of the necklaces and the parents all ended up working on them (ha!). I corralled them for the scavenger hunt but was hard to pry them away from playing, but they did like the hunt.

For her 5th we had a decorate your own mask, water balloon fight and piñata. They really loved the balloons and piñata. But we really didn't have time for the decorate the masks.

It's good to have some activities but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't get to everything. Piñata will probably be a big hit though

  • Yes, that is more than enough!  We had Garrett's b-day party at our house and I didn't have any games.  They kids just wanted to be together and were so busy playing with all of the toys, if I had planned any games I probably would have nixed them.  It was nice because the kids kept to themselves busy and the adults were able to visit.

I am guess that this will be the year to break our streak of having nice weather for our March birthday kids!  =)

  • I wanted to add that for dd's frozen party I think we will have a snowball toss too and maybe water balloons again. But for the snowball toss I think I will just have it available and let the kids use it if they want vs being organized.

I think you're right!  We were able to have all of DD's parties outside since 2010 (although when she was born in 2009 it was FREEZING!).  This year I'm not holding my breath!

  • I agree, I think that's enough.

DD is turning 5 the beginning of April and it's always freezing!  It snowed the day she was born.  I'm really hoping we can send the kids outside this year.  Note to self,  If I ever have another baby make sure it's born in the summer.  I think a summer party would be so much easier.

  • sounds fun.  Keira was at a frozen themed party a few weeks ago at Fun Fore All and the mom had "ice crystals" aka hard candy like ribbon candy on the cupcakes.  Cute!
