Buy at Costco

edited February 2014 in Money Matters
Hoffse got me wondering...what do you buy at Costco?

Personally, I love their organic chicken, eggs, and toiletries.  Oh and the gummy prenatal vitamins.

Re: Buy at Costco

  • I don't care for shopping at those kind of stores but DH has a membership at costco near his work which is not near our home.  I have him stock up on hamburger meat and if we have a party they have really good appetizers that you can just put in the oven.  he recently got these pot stickers (asian)  that were so yummy! I also get my spa finders gift cards there so when I go to the spa I save money....you spend $80 but you get $100 for services.

We actually have a membership with sams club. The gas savings alone make the membership worth it.
We buy toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, freezer bags. We don't buy food in bulk since there's only 3 of us. Occasionally I'll get a box of muffins or croissants and freeze
  • We use BJs for gas, giftcards, movie passes, travel booking, organic eggs, paper products, English muffins, lunch snacks (goldfish, Cheezits, etc.) and sometimes alcohol. Also my contact lenses. For most of our other staples, the price point isn't good enough to make buying in bulk worth it. I also plan to check our their prices the next time I need tires.

This thread makes me so happy... we buy:

    -Burgers
    -Chicken breasts
    -Pork loins
    -Lunch meat
    -Milk
    -1/2 and 1/2
    -Feta
    -Parmesan
    -Plain Greek yogurt
    -Frozen strawberries
    -Avocados
    -K-cups
    -Whole wheat bread
-Cinnamon bread for breakfast and/or english muffins
-Cereal (when the kind we like is on sale)
    -Marinara sauce
    -Canned chicken
    -Pasta & Tortellini
    -Olive oil
    -Hummus
    -Pita chips
    -Vanilla
    -Rice
    -Pet food
    -Bottled water
    -Paper towels
    -Toilet paper
    -Freezer bags
    -Trash bags
    -Laundry detergent
    -Dishwasher detergent
    -Soap
-Lysol wipes (or the Costco version)
-Those sticky lint brushes because my cat sheds everywhere
    -Vitamins
    -Ibuprofin
    -Breathe right strips
    -Vitamin supplements (ie: Vitamin C)
    -Cold medicine
    -Feminine products
    -Moisturizer

And one-off things we have bought there in the past: a laptop, a set of tri-ply stainless steel pots and pans (got a 13-piece set for $140, it was ridiculous), a bed frame, a mattress, my ergonomic office chair, an ooma, a couple rokus, a television, my H's car.....

I would say I get my money's worth out of our membership.

  • I recently started shopping at Costco since we're in the process of moving into a house and so we have more space. I still have to look around but for the most part there seem to be some good deals to be had. Here is what I bought on our last trip:

-Chicken Thighs (these are for DH--it will take him quite a while to go through all of these since I don't eat meat)
    -Hummus
    -Sugar Snap Peas
    -Edamame
-Spring Mix Salad (we eat a lot of salad so this will really save us $)
    -Onions
    -Pasta or Ravioli
    -Canned Tomatoes
    -Deli Meat
    -Sandwich Bread
    -Coffee Creamer
    -Coffee
    -Chips (pita, tortilla & potato)
    -Quinoa
    -Flax Seed
    -Dried Fruit
    -Flavored Water/Powerade
    -Paper Towels
    -Toilet Paper
    -Contact Lens solution
    -Tupperware & plastic bags
    -Kitty Litter
-Cleaning supplies (I used to make my own, but lately haven't had the motivation to do that. I do like that they have animal friendly cleaning and beauty products available. That is probably my biggest money saver so far. Still more expensive than making my own but much better than other stores).

I bought pet food for the first time yesterday and the cats went crazy over it, so that will probably be a continuous buy for us too. I also scored a $100 gift card for airport parking and only paid half price--we're planning a trip out of town next month so that will be put to good use. DH has bought towels there in the past and I actually found some cute outfits for my nieces not too long ago. DH has his eye on a tandem kayak that he saw yesterday---oy vey! :)

On a random note, @hoffse it sounds like you bought the pan set I had had my eye on this past Christmas! I ended up going with a different brand (found a similar Calphalon set at an outlet mall for the same price) but I had every intention of buying that set. It had great reviews online :)
  • I don't usually post on this board, but I just wanted to add that the Costco disinfecting wipes are awesome. I brought some in to work and I now have three people I buy them for.

I do love Costco. We have a Sam's membership through H's work, but I just can't give up my Costco.
  • We have a Sams Club, but it's an hour away.  So I only get there every other month.  Here's what we buy though.

    Chicken Breast
    Toilet bowl cleaner
    Paper towels
    Cat Food
    Dog Food
    Cat Litter
    Lunch Meat
    Frozen veggies

Although we'll likely not renew our membership this year.  With it being so far away from our house, we don't utilize it much.  I also don't like that you can't use coupons on products.  I've found that purchasing items on sale from the local grocery store and using a coupon with it, it's actually cheaper.

  • @RockyMountainGirl, I love those pots and pans.  The best part is they're so inexpensive that I just run them through the dishwasher and don't worry about it.  I would never have done that with all-clad.

@Sillygirl45, yes the costco disinfecting wipes are fantastic.  I love that they have a textured side to help scrub!  I usually buy whichever brand is on sale that month, but I do like it when the Kirkland brand is cheapest.

I wish we could use coupons too.  I agree, sometimes I find it cheaper in the store.  But sometimes I find Costco has more of whatever it is in the packaging than the local grocery store......I always compare the unit cost.  Drives my DH nuts.

  • Does Sam's club not have monthly coupons?  It's been a long time since I've shopped there (though I do share a membership with my parents).  Shopping the costco coupons usually saves a lot of money.

  • In case anyone out there is deciding between clubs, BJ's does take manufacturers coupons. I believe you can even stack them with store coupons, though I'm a generic girl so I haven't tried it.
  • @hoffse They will have an ad every few months that shows their "specials."  So there are items marked down for a period of time, but no coupons.
