Vacation Tips Welcome!

So, we are now thinking about going to the Outer Banks in May instead of Key West.  (Going to Key West in October...Chad is from Vermont and doesn't do intense heat well, so May in Key West would be a little intense for him.)

I have stayed in the Outer Banks before, but I was like 13.  I would also like to stay a night near Colonial Williamsburg to do nerdy history stuff.

I know we have ladies from all over on this board, so get at me with your tips! :)

Re: Vacation Tips Welcome!

  • Ironically- dh and I have been talking about going to both these plases this year also. We havee never been to eitherr so I would love suggestions also! :D
  • I've never been to the Outer Banks before. H has been and says that they're awesome. He said they've got 200 ft tall sand dunes that you can hang glide off of. There's a Wright Brothers Aviation museum (Kill Devil Hills). He said that he went around Memorial Day to Hatteras (he can't remember for sure if that's right, just that it was the northern part) and couldn't get in the water because it was too cold, but that you should go for the lighthouse. Ocracoke was the same trip and it was far enough south that he could swim there. He said it's a 40 minute ferry ride, but that it's really awesome. He said it's secluded and nice if you want to just relax on the beach. I hope that makes more sense to you than it does to me, I was confused writing it...haha.

I think we might end up going to Key West the first week of June and going with H's family! His mom has been dying to go and we mentioned that we wanted to go back, so I'm excited about that!

  • Yay! I've been to one of those places! I was little when I went to Williamsburg, I do remember it being interesting to see. I should probably mention that it was around the point where American Girl dolls were popular in the 90s, so I was excited to see where Felicity might have lived.

  • H and I ended up spending a day in Williamsburg on our honeymoon, after Hurricane Sandy forced our cruise ship to reroute. It was fun!

  • If you like historical theater, The Lost Colony is a really fun outdoor experience. They open on May 30, so I'm not sure if you will still be there.

I saw that doing some research, it looks so cool!  We should be there through the 31st, so I'd love to catch it :)

Yeah my parents said they might want to go to Key West with us in October or over the holidays, which is another reason we are holding off a bit.  I'm jealous you're going first!! :)

  • Key West - OMG we loved this place.  But know there's not really any beaches... there's a state park that's beach-like.  We went over spring break/St patty's day which was a Freaking blast!  We flew into Ft Lauderdale, and drove it.  I loved seeing all the keys, and would drive again if we go back down.

We stayed at 0 duvall street http://www.oceankey.com/.  Duvall St is the party place, but that hotel is AMAZING.  I highly recommend going to Irish Kevin bar!  SO much fun.  There was an entertainer there that was AWESOME - JMH.  When we got back we would watch the live feed when he was on we loved him so much.  He can seriously drink Guiness like it was job - with "ninja moves".  Hog Salon is another big place.  There's no open container laws so as long as your drink is in a plastic cup (they have them as you leave the bars) you can just walk around.

We went to the southern most point, and the butterfly conservatory when it was rainy.  We just winged the whole trip.  It was our first vacation together actually haha.

MALLORY SQUARE!  This is where you can watch the sun set, it was right beside our hotel. Go early to get a good spot if you're short like me.  They have street performers, and people count down to the sunset.  It was awesome to me because us East Coasters can only see sunrises over the ocean.  We also did a booze cruise to watch the sunset over the water.  All you can drink beer, wine and margaritas, and apps.

I have a ton of pictures on FB of Key West!!!

    -------------------------

Outer Banks - I went in early April one year with my cousins, it was in the 70s (we all got burnt) which beat our cold weather up here!  We stayed in Nagshead, got a house from long & foster reality.  If you go on the off season it's super cheap.  May might still be off season if it's before Memorial day. We went to some of the light houses, that was the only touristy stuff we did.  We just wanted to sleep, drink and relax.

    ----------------------

Williamsburg is on my list of places to go!  We went to VA Beach one summer but we did Busch Gardens instead of the history nerd stuff.  So you will have to update me on this!

Awesome!  I've been to Key West a few times but it's always fun to hear what people like there.  We usually stay at the Southernmost Hotel.

We were thinking of Nags Head!  The rates are a steal.  Honestly the whole trip will be like 1/3 of what it costs to go to Key West.  If we wait to go with my parents later this year, they might help pay :)...maybe! lol

  • Haha I would have scaled back if I knew you've been to key West before!

  • No worries!  I could talk about Key West allllllllllllllll dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!  We really do want to go but I'm worried Chad would be too hot in May.  It's seriously like being on the surface of the sun, which I don't mind, but I tan really easily and Chad is a pale, slightly ginger kid ;)

  • Ooh, I know both of those places really well! I totally echo what everyone else has said so far, but to keep from repeating:

    OUTER BANKS
    - Everyone suggested my thing, that you definitely have to go to both the Lost Colony (a bit of a drive from Nags Head but nothing nuts) and the Wright Brothers (SUPER close)
    - The only restaurant I can remember going to is the Outer Banks Brewing Company, and I really liked it. Well, that's not true, we also went to and like Dirty Dick's Crab Shack but it's super corny and chain-y. DH & I liked it a lot, but I hesitate to recommend it so I don't sound super lame.

    KEY WEST
    - You must go get key lime pie at the Key Lime Pie Factory. Non-negotiable.
    - Eat at El Siboney Restaurant. AMAZING Cuban food!
