  • I try not to complain because I know that people have it worse than here in terms of weather, but darn its cold here today. Cold, bleak, dreary. It makes me wanna nap.
  • I spent the morning turning big pieces of paper into small pieces of paper.  Finally forcing myself to start sorting and tossing the piles of papers I've been keeping of various financial things.  Almost there.  Need to go buy some file folders.

Started watching my diet again.  I'm down about 8 lbs so far....:)

Just did finances.  Won't even talk about that one.

  • I need to start watching my diet, but I am not really motivated.  I am hoping to finish up the ice cream we have and not buy any for awhile. Other than that, we don't really keep junk food in the house.

Justin and I have been talking about finances.  I want to start a retirement account of some sorts.  He wants to use any extra money to pay down SL. IDK who is right. LOL

I try not to keep junk food in the house either. :)

Why not do both?  Put some toward loans and part toward retirement....

  • I am finally off after a 11 hour day. I want cookies.
  • Welcome to the party Aleigha!

I will say my cookies are not that great.
  • I really don't think I'm up for a party. I'm sore and tired
  • Feel better!!!!
  • I love monster cookies! I haven't had them in so long.

And I keep trying to convince J that we should open up IRAs for the year, but he doesn't think we have enough money to do that.

My bank will open an IRA savings account for as little as $100.  I have my Roth IRA at American Funds.  Their minimum is $250.  It all starts somewhere....the worst thing you can do it nothing.

Oh I know. He keeps saying that we should keep all the money we have for the house. My argument is we can't double next year. I will probably win though, since I do the finances.

Even if you could double.....you've lost time.

For example, if 20-year-old Britney makes a one-time $5,000 contribution to her Roth IRA and earns an average 8% annual return, and if she never touches the money, that $5,000 will grow to $160,000 by the time she retires at age 65. But if she waits until she’s my age (39) to make her single investment, that $5,000 would only grow to $40,000. Time is the primary ingredient to the magic that is compounding.

  • Just to further empathize...

The cost of waiting one year
It’s human nature to procrastinate. “I can start saving next year,” you tell yourself. “I don’t have time to open a Roth IRA — I’ll do it later.” But the costs of delaying are enormous. Even one year makes a difference. Here’s a chart to illustrate the cost of procrastination. Again, we’re using 20-year-old Britney as a basis.

    image

If Britney makes $5,000 annual contributions to her Roth IRA, and she earns an 8% return, she’ll have $1,932,528.09 saved at retirement. But if she waits even five years, her annual contributions would have to increase to nearly $7,500 to save that same amount by age 65. And if she were to wait until she was my age, she’d have to contribute nearly $25,000 a year!

  • Given the maximum contribution to an IRA right now is $5500, you couldn't even make up for it unless you saved outside of a retirement account or had extra room to invest in your 401k.

  • Mark-

While you are fixing everything at my house, can you have a talk with my husband about all of this. ;)
  • Yeah, can we have like a video presentation/chat where you show this to all of them...

Ironically, J is the one that insisted on opening up an IRA when he was 20. He put $300 in it, and it's already doubled.
