First time home buyers, what did you have to buy?

So a big AW! We finally found a house we love, we put in an offer and we're now under contract! It took us longer then expected but that gave us plenty of time to plan and save. I know there are going to be a lot of things we need for our new house, but I would like to start buying some stuff now. My parents kept things in storage after they moved into their condo. We have garbage cans for the curb, a lawn mower and some other things. They don't need it  since the associate take care of everything.

What will we need to get? What were things that you didn't think about? I would love to see your lists! Light bulbs, shovels, etc?
Thanks!

Congratulations!  What a wonderful feeling!!  We bought so much and were running to Home Depot every weekend with new things we found we needed when we closed last summer.  Off the top of my head, we've bought a garden hose, watering can, garden nozzle, grass seed, garden tools, ladder, outdoor chairs, door mat for front door, paint (and associated supplies), snowblower, snow shovels, blinds, curtains, area rugs, furniture, new Christmas tree, more lamps, new appliances, cleaning supplies, new locks (first thing we did!), outdoor grill, hand saw, hedge trimmer, mulch, rakes, leaf blower, all kinds of decor (mirrors, clocks, art)..........

I can't wait for spring to come, but I know we'll be at Home Depot alot again this year!

PS - One of my favorite finds when we first moved in....pleated paper shades you cut to size that we used until we decided what we wanted on the windows.  You won't feel on display and you don't have to do the old fashioned way of sheets covering the windows.  They also don't look half bad.  We had some of them on windows for a couple of months!

  • Here's the list that I came up with after we bought our new home. Good luck!

    This is great! Thank you.

We waited until we moved in. H has tools and we had most of what we needed to get along already. I bought things as we went.

I would suggest moving in, seeing what you need and going from there. I did get a ton of shelf paper right away and my favorite cleaning products. First I cleaned, then moved, then shelf papered, then cleaned again :)

Once you're moved in you can select drawer organizers, trash cans, storage shelves, etc... In the correct dimensions.

    Good luck!
  • our first big purchase was a snow blower since we closed the day before a huge storm.
paint and painting supplies, tools, everything new to decorate the bathroom- towels, bath mat, curtain, and cups, apothecary jars etc.
kitchen organizational things- paper towel holder, dish rack, spice rack, etc.
we bought a new dresser, a shelf for our DVDs. We are also planning to buy a new couch and a flat screen tv, but for now our old/broken love seat and big bulky old CRT TV are doing the job ok.

eventually we will also be buying a lawn mower, garden tools, curtains and curtain rods etc.

  • We had to wait for a long time to own a HOME for ourselves, I know most will understand how hard is to own one. Before moving in I bought new bed sheets, pillow covers, blinds, curtains, rugs, bulbs, lamps, safety kit, first aid kit, must needed kitchen items, hand washes, soaps and other shower accessories, an independent power source, tool kit, toilet papers etc. I remember going from one end to the other of Walmart to buy anything and everything that I thought is needed. One whole week I was shopping, was really tiring but I LOVED IT :D

For those planning to buy their first home, keep your patients and look for a good and affordable home. From my experience don't ever go for something that is more to handle; take some time and make a decision.
