Re: QOTD 3/4

  • 1, maybe 2, but probably just 1, and not just yet. We'll probably start TTC about a year and a half from now or so.

  • I always thought two. But, now we are thinking we will be a one and done family.

  • Definitely 2

I'm an only child, and I hate it! I really wish that I had a sibling!

3 or more just seems like too many for us.

  • DH and I have decided on 2. He had one sibling. I went through quasi only child syndrome as a kid and I don't think I'd want to deal with that from a parent standpoint. (Since I lived with my grandparents and my sisters lived with my mom, I felt like an only kid.)

  • Since I have two stepdaughters already, I'm pretty set on just one more, although H and I are kind of hoping for twins. :)

  • 2 since H already has 2 and we really don't want to have an only kid.  I used to say 3, but I'm good with 2 now.

  • We're thinking two.

  • I'm gonna go with this one and see how it is. Some days I think one and done since I don't really enjoy being pregnant. Other days I think two would be great. H wants a whole litter, so who knows.

  • However many we are blessed with!  But we will stop actively trying once I reach a certain age.

  • lol not at the moment!  I know many happy families of 8 and 12...but I don't feel called in that direction.  My high number would probably be 4.  Honestly I won't know how I feel until I have the first one, though.  Maybe that will be all I can handle! haha

  • I always wanted at least 2, possibly 3 but now that I have 2 I'm done Lol its amazimg how much more it takes to care for each addition child!
  • We both want 2. If we end up with 2 of the same gender, we may consider adopting a 3rd of the other gender, but really, we just want 2 happy and healthy babies.

We both want 2.  I came from a family of 3 kids and I feel like it was just too much...someone was always left out.

  • I used to think 3-5 kids since I am the youngest of 7 and love having such a large family but now I am older I realize that is probably financially impossible! And since I seem to be having a difficult time getting pregnant I will be happy with 1 (maybe 2) happy healthy babies!
  • Back in high school I wanted 6 kids! DH and I agreed on 2 and hoping financially we can swing it! Prices for daycare have floored us and the thought of paying double per month is insane! Unfortunately neither one of us could stay home full time.
  • 2-3, depending on our financial situation.  @DanaOCNY I have started to browse daycare costs and I'm not sure how we're affording it either.  I need to seriously figure it out.  We can't afford to have either of us stay home either.
  • Childcare is crazy expensive.  I didn't realize it until we had a baby boom at work and people started talking about it.  They have childcare at work that's income based, but it's still $600-700 for infant.  20% discount for additional kids.  My one CW was paying $1150 for 1 kid somewhere else!

I definitely added this to our "when to TTC" checklist.  We paid off enough debt to free up enough for daycare (we will be paying my parents, but I wanted to be able to cover it since my mom wasn't looking good for a while, she's doing a lot better now) and all the extras that come with baby.

I just had a convo with my friend.  She comes to me for budgeting advice, and she's like what's a good age gap for another kid... and I was honest and said "when you can afford another kid in daycare".  She didn't like it, but that's my opinion.

  • I tried to explain the cost of daycare to my in-laws. They assumed that daycare cost $100 a week...I was like um, NO! Try 2-3x that much! That's one of the big reasons why H and I are waiting to TTC.

  • I want 3-4. Who knows what will happen because of DH's infertility though. We have minimal daycare costs though, due to working opposite shifts.

I don't even want to know how much that will be for you in DC now!

I would say, expect to spend at least $1100+ per month. I had a good idea of what to expect to spend in our area, and have been blown away how much more it is. We can definitely not afford to have only one of us work.

  • Yeah...the whole thing gives me anxiety!

We used most of our savings on moving costs, so we definitely need to build up our savings again before we can even think about kids. Plus, since I lost my graduate student stipend, we're out $2,000 a month. I'm hoping that I can find a job soon! Nothing would give me more satisfaction at my thesis defense than to tell my committee, "oh, I already have a job : P".

  • Wow, this makes me happy I live where I do! I used to work at one of the nicer daycares around Chattanooga and I think it was $160 per week for the infants and they charged the most for infants. I think they also gave a small discount for siblings in the center.
