Anyone observing Lent this year?

Re: Anyone observing Lent this year?

  • We both are this year. He's giving up fries and soda. I'm giving up soda and Pinterest.

  • My daughter goes to Catholic school and she'll be officially doing Lent for the first time this year.  Husband kind of observes - he begrudgingly does meatless Fridays and goes to services, but rarely gives up anything.  I'm not Catholic so I get out of it.

I'm a vegetarian and Fridays is one of our scheduled "eat out" days -- so it's one of the only days in the week where Husband eats meat.  This is why it's "begrudgingly."  That and it's such a fun word to say.

  • I'm not giving anything up this year, but I still do the fasting.

  • I don't observe Lent, but I'm going to do a decluttering challenge I found on Pinterest that falls during Lent. It's 40 Bags in 40 Days. MH is Catholic but doesn't really observe Lent either. We occasionally go with his parents for fish on Fridays.

  • So I struggle each year with what to give up as none of the "traditional" things apply to me (I don't drink soda, H and I don't have cable TV, etc....) so my Mom actually came up with a good one for me this year...

I'm going to give up leaving trash in my car each day. I love having a clean car but once I clean it it's only a few days before I have it looking like a trash compactor again. For me the purpose of giving something up is so whenever you miss it/think about it you are supposed to remember the sacrifice Christ made. So whenever I'm exhausted at the end of the day and too tired to clean out the car it will be a great time to remember what Christ did despite the number of times he must have felt exhausted and drained.
  • I just came back from getting my ashes and technically I don't need to observe the no meat rule. Not sure what I am going to give up yet. I will miss singing at the Holy Day masses this year though.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • Dd and I will be going to get ashes at noon. I am giving up sweets for lent. All chocolate, baked goods, my yummy Easter jelly beans. Dh doesn't think I can do it since I am addicted to sweets.

  • Yep.

We always do something MORE or BETTER instead of giving anything up. Last year I did an ab workout every day of Lent. Since I already have a hardcore workout now, this year I'm keep a "positive" journal. I've been stuck under a black cloud and I want to stop being so negative. I plan on keeping track of at least one positive/good thing each day.

  • I have never observed Lent before, but am this year.

Last night before I went to bed, I deleted all the social/smart apps from my phone. For the next 40 days, I'm just using it for calls & texts. Eek.

  • I love Lent. Is that weird? hahah!
I went to Mass and got my ashes this morning and got a lot of weird looks in my classes today.
DH&I both will be doing meatless Fridays. I'm not giving anything up this year. Instead I'm adding positive things. I'm trying to floss every day during lent (I'm terrible with flossing!) And am going to pray a decade of the rosary each day and offer it up for someone in my life. I'm pretty excited for that!
I don't think DH is doing anything, I'm not sure.

An amazing book I just read on the subject is called "One Thousand Gifts", it's about a woman who was challenged over a year to write down one thousand gifts that God had given her and the journey she went on through it. It was absolutely amazing and so inspiring to try and keep a positive outlook. I highly recommend it!
  • I am giving up meat (beef, pork, and poultry), and I am also going to attempt to list every night three things I am grateful for before I go to bed.

  • DH is a pastor, so...  ;-)

We had services tonight, and I didn't have meat today but I don't really follow that anymore.  I grew up Catholic and still hate the idea of giving up something for Lent.  I try to be more mindful of my behavior and how it affects others during this time, though.

  • I'm giving up secular audiobooks and podcasts on my commute to and from work.

  • I'm giving up candy and cookies.  I am a sugar addict, so this needs to happen anyways.  I'm almost happy to have Lent as a motivator to stop eating so much junk.  And at my workplace, temptation abounds!   We don't eat meat on Fridays in Lent either.  DH is going to pack his lunch every day instead of going out to eat.  He'll donate the money he saves to the local food bank.

  • DH and I are giving up sugar. It's only day 3 and I'm having withdrawals.

Like @packfan20 , we add more as well. We are writing down three positive things that we are thankful for each night before bed. So far we are both really enjoying this. We are also taking the money we normally budget for a dinner out each week and adding it to our weekly tithe at church.

  • Being Catholic, a practicing one at that, I'm definitely observing Lent.  It would just be weird to eat meat on a Friday during Lent.  Usually I try to do something to better myself, but I can't think of anything this year, so I'm just going to keep my good habits going.
