Teen Sues Parents to Pay for College/Living Expenses

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/trending&id=9452568

Thoughts?

I think the spoiled brat is out of her damned mind. I think this girl (and her friend's father, who is backing up her suit) will be in for an extremely rude awakening when a verdict is passed.

I sure hope they are in for a rude awakening. Good gracious has society gone mad lately.

I hope to pay for my children's college education, but you best believe they will understand they are lucky and it is a gift not a right.

  • Ditto @aggiebug. I hope she is in for a rude awakening! My parents were able to help me and I am thankful every day for it. I had certain rules too, but if they asked the same of her as mine did than it's not unreasonable.

  • What a brat. I would've kicked the rude, selfish twit out when she turned 18 too. Their house, their rules. She's 18 and an adult now so she can pay for her own college. I certainly hope the case either gets thrown out or they're smart enough to make her lose the case. If she wins, I foresee a LOT of brats suing their parents in the near future. So sad.

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

  • Like some of you have mentioned, my parents were gracious enough (and able) to pay for my college. I consider myself extremely lucky now that I don't have those student loans, but I know plenty of friends who got their own loans and took care of their own expenses. Not a single one of them, me included, would ever have dreamed of demanding our parents pay for anything once we were past 18.

I lived with my parents during school breaks and for a couple of years after graduating until DH and I bought our first house. I absolutely had to follow their rules and help keep the house clean. No kid likes it, especially when they get older, but it's just what you do as a respectful adult!

I have a feeling this girl is going to act like an entitled brat about everything for a while until she learns what the real world outside of mommy and daddy's generosity is like.

  • What a self absorbed little twerp.

Guess I should sue my parents.  They didn't want me to go to college, wouldn't co-sign my student loans, and did not support it.

Guess what honey. Get yourself a job and pay for your own college.  Or don't go until you can straighten out your act and realize that you aren't entitled to having college paid for.  You have to earn it, and she obviously didn't by disobeying her parent's rules and moving out of their house.

  • I feel like there is probably more to the story than we are being given.  Maybe they had expressly said that they would pay and there is some sort of liability to that?

Also, if they don't finish paying her HS tuition and she isn't allowed to graduate that will impact her ability to go at all.

I am not saying that she doesn't sound entitled, but I am guessing there are some grounds for the suit.

  • I think the parents should definitely have to pay the remainder of her high school tuition bill as they were the ones that entered into the financial contract with the school (when their daughter was underage).

As far as college goes, I think I need to hear more about the "college fund".  Is it just a regular savings account or is it a 529 or other officially designated fund?

  • I got kicked out of my house for being a punk after I turned 18. After a week of roaming, I went home and started respecting my parents' house. I didn't sue them. I can't even imagine.
  • I can't even imagine the entitlement going through her head where she thinks suing her parents is the answer.

  • I keep wondering if this money is in a custodial account which I think could make things a bit trickier. I'm still team parents though from what I have read.

I could hold you for a million years

  • I'm sure there's more to it than this little article covers. I didn't dig any further, so more comprehensive coverage is bound to be out there somewhere.

The parents should absolutely be responsible for the paying the remainder of her HS tuition if it hasn't been paid already, but that was a previous financial obligation they'd signed into; I can't imagine it would be up for contest.

I'm most shocked and appalled that this entitled brat thinks it's her parents' legal responsibility to pay for her college education. No parent is legally required to pay for college. There are just no grounds I can see for that being a viable suit.

I guess it's different if the money is already in a specifically allocated fund; my parents didn't have a college fund for me, so I didn't think about that being the case here. I can't see how they could withhold that if it's the case, but I also can't see her SUING them to still get the money when there's only one place it can go anyway.

The judge actually decided that the parents don't need to pay the rest of her high school tuition because the school has taken it upon themselves to let her continue and some people from the community raised money to pay it for her.

As far as the college money goes, she has a designated college fund (it's not clear if it's just a savings account or an actual 529 type account).  She says her parents moved the money out of the account, they say they didn't.

ETA:  I agree that this girl is coming across as a spoiled brat.  She doesn't want to live by her parents rules but she wants their money.  However, I'm interested to see what the final ruling on this is.  It's easy to say that her parents don't have to pay for her to go to college, however school funding in this country is often determined considering your parents financial situation, assuming that they'll pay.  I knew several people in high school that had to become legally emancipated because their parents were not going to contribute to their education but they couldn't get grants/loans/scholarships because their parents make "too much" money.  So while most people will agree that your parents don't have to pay for you to go to college, financial institutions and our government seem to disagree.
