Convince me to read Gone Girl

I picked up Gone Girl  during the summer and only read about 30 pages before I switched to something else.  I finished Alienated last week and decided I better try to read Gone Girl again, but I've yet to open it.  I've heard mixed reviews about it so may that is why I'm not pumped about reading it.  But, I feel obligated to read it because there is the movie coming out and a family friend (David Fincher) is the director of it- no I have never met him, however I know his mom (she's a family friend, came to my wedding, etc.)

So, convince me... please. :)

Re: Convince me to read Gone Girl

  • Personally, I liked it. I think the mixed reviews come from the fact that it takes some surprising twists and turns. I don't think many people were "meh" on it, just didn't like the direction it took. So, whether you end up liking it or not, it will probably evoke a strong reaction in you, and that's kinda fun either way right?

I also found it to be a very quick and engaging read. I got really sucked into the story, it was one of those for me where even when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it. I love those books.

  • I can't believe David Fincher is a friend of your family!!  I LOVE HIS WORK!

I'm not going to be the one to convince you to read Gone Girl though.  I didn't love it, though I do think it'll make a good movie.  If "knowing" the director of the movie isn't enough to get you to read it, I'm not sure you can be convinced.
  • I can't.  I hated it.

Hoycie's got it right. It's one of those books you either love or hate, there's really no inbetween. I happened to love it. I love her writing style that she can create characters you utterly hate but you still want to read the story.
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

  • Ah! I love David Fincher.  That's so cool.

On to the subject of hand.  For me, I really enjoyed it because it wasn't the typical type of book I was reading at the time.  It's a mystery that kept me guessing.  Plus, who doesn't love to read the book before seeing the movie?!

I kept picking it up and putting it down for other books that grabbed my attention quicker. But I kept going back because my friends insisted I do. It took about 100 pages for me to get into it but then I loved it. I've never enjoyed a book where I disliked all the characters before, it was a new experience. I felt so many emotions and I personally loved the twists and turns it takes. Give it another try!

GF has become one of my favorite authors because of this.  In every other book where I've developed a dislike of the MC, I didn't care what happened to them, I didn't feel one way or the other about the story, and it was easily forgotten moments after putting down the book.

In all of GF's books there's a MC that you love to hate, but for some reason you really want to know what happens to them in spite of it, and then you dwell on it for weeks afterward.
