Food Budget

I was working on a budget yesterday, and I was wondering how much you spend a month on groceries.

I know how much our mortgage is going to be, and what are more average expenses are going to be, but my parents haven't been charging us full price for food so we could save money, so I have no idea what we are going to spend.

I would ask you about utilities costs, but with us all at different parts of the country and with different sized houses, I don't think it would help. But if you want to share that, you can.

We spend about $1200 a month. I am really no help here. We have a family of four plus nanny.

For us two I budget 150 for store food. 50 for a nice place to eat and 20 for fast food if we are traveling or something. This does not include alcohol. I usually stay close to that amount for two adults and guniea pigs that eat veggies twice a day. I coupon and don't buy junk. I also use bountiful baskets for me fruit and veggies. Idk if they have this where you live but I believe I save so much with it.

We budget $350 a month for food.

Our gas, electric, and water are about $300 per month. We live in a 2 bedroom townhouse.

Wow Jen. That is really impressive and almost hard to believe. I can get about a cart full for $100 but that still only lasts about 12 meals. 4 days and about 50 plates of food.

I think my parents are at about 125 a week for four of us, but I'm not sure if it would divide evenly.
I am impressed by that, Jen. I know I will be couponing and sale watching, but not to an extreme level. I was thinking I would be around 350 for the month, so pretty close to Tara. I just wanted to make sure I'm in the right ball park!

I was daring today and pre made 20 slow cooker meals. Even for that it was $175. I stuck strictly to the list. I am so excited to try some of them.

I don't usually go over $70.00 at the store. I go twice a month usually. So that is $150.00. We do not eat much meat, and I know that meat is expensive.

We don't eat out often and if we do we try to share. Hardly order drinks, no apps. ect.

The basket I get is twice a month as well. That is usually $18.50. So that is $37.00. This is only fresh fruits and veggies.

J makes fresh homemade bread. We buy bread, but not all the time. We make our own spaghetti sauce. I can't tell you the last time we bought any meal frozen. Once in a great while, if we find a good deal, we'll pick up a frozen pizza. We also don't entertain much since we have no friends or family here.

So all in all its between $150-$200.00 a month.

We have a 3 bd house (2700 sq ft). We pay 225 ish for gas and electricity. I think our house is not energy efficient though.

I coupon but I don't think its extreme. I don't have a stockpile or anything. I just online coupon and add them to my card. Safeway. Then I will look at my list and see if there are any printable coupons for something that I know that I am going to buy.

We also don't buy junk food other than ice cream.

We spend about 200 a month on groceries. We eat way to much frozen crap lol. Once my mom moved in that is totally going to change and hopefully we will be shopping once a week and eating fresh stuff.

We pay about 200 a month for utilities, not counting tv and all that.

Awesome! Thanks everyone! I think I've got the right amount of budget. I think I have to cut down on some of our discretionary expenses, but I've got the other stuff just about right.

Our house is pretty good sized and our utilities are $190 a month. D has all energy efficient bulbs and we keep our heat at 62 in the winter and ac at 78 in the summer.

We are more than likely doing a geothermal system, so our heating and cooling costs should be minimal. So it would just be for times it's really cold, and then our electricity for appliances and propane for the water heater and cooking.
