Wedding Dress Re-Design?

So, the QOTD got me thinking about this again.  I had the idea of maybe re-designing my wedding dress into a cocktail style dress.  Maybe dying it a different color and cutting off the bottom, taking out all the layers, and making it something I could wear on nicer occasions.

Would you ever dramatically alter your wedding dress?  Or is this just a crazy idea?

Re: Wedding Dress Re-Design?

  • I would consider it if there was a way mine would still look good. With the style and look of the dress I don't think it would be possible to still look good.
  • Mine would be like a straight up ballerina tutu if it was cut up!  So much tulle...oh boy that was heavy.  But if I had a more fitted gown I might think about it!

  • The bigger question is, if you were shopping for gowns today what would you pick!  I sense a new QOTD ....  @cathy :D

  • I found this video on YouTube.  Pretty cool!

  • I've thought about making a pillow for our bed out of the flower appliqué detailing on my bodice....but I can't bring myself to cut it up yet. Then I feel guilty and think I should just donate the damn thing! Maybe once I get pregnant and realize I will probably never got into it again I will be able to decide!

But I have thought about dyeing my rehearsal dress a different color because I will never really have a reason to wear an ivory cocktail dress again that isn't a super no-no like to a wedding.

  • Thast is awesome.  I don't think that would work for my dress.  Plus I have zero sewing skills.
  • I have also seen where you can take your wedding dress and have it made into a christening gown or bassinet bedding for baby.
  • I wouldn't, simply because 1. not sure it'd still fit and 2. it wasn't a design to lend itself to a different style dress. The bodice is 100% covered in fancy beadwork, and it's a corset...not cocktail dress appropriate, typically!

  • I plan to make my dress into a Christening gown or a Communion gown for my daughter, if I have one.  It's a mermaid shaped gown, so I don't think it would look good as a shorter gown.

Mine could definetly be shortened but I never wear white, so I'd never wear my dress again even if it was shorter.  Plus, I have a fantasy that, if I have a daughter, she may want to wear my dress for her wedding. Lame, I know!

  • I know that no one will ever wear my dress again, but I can't imagine cutting it up. I preserved my dress because my cousins seemed interested in borrowing my veil someday. Also, maybe if I have a daughter, she will want a piece of the lace to wrap her bouquet with or something.

  • For me, cutting up my dress isn't a big deal.  If you read my answer to the QOTD, you know that I'm not super attached to my dress.  So, if I could turn it into something that I'd actually wear and enjoy wearing, I'd be pretty happy.

I think my dress could easily be shortened.  It's a fit and flare style and it starts to flare out right at my knees, so it wouldn't be too short.  I'm continuing to loose weight, so I think it would actually have to be take in, especially up top since I'm smaller there now.
