I've been putting it off for a year now but it's time to bite the bullet and get my umbilical hernia repaired.  I'm sure it will be a breeze compared to my c/section, but I think I'm more nervous of being put out.  At least with the c/section I was awake and knew what was going on.  Has anyone on this board had a hernia repair?  About how long did it take you to get back to every day activities?  I'm meeting with my surgeon today to set up a date on the calendar.

  • I'm not familiar with the surgery, but lots of T&P that it goes smoothly!
  • I'm not familiar with it either, but T&Ps to you!

  • Well it looks like I will go in the first week of April to get it taken care of.  The good thing is it is still tiny and will only need about 5 stitches.  It's the last of my pregnancy issues that will finally be resolved.  I hope it doesn't come back again

  • Hope you don't mind me putting in my two cents, I don't usually post here.

Anywho, if it's relatively small, maybe a week to three for recovery. Listen to your body and rest when you need to. Especially right after surgery. The worst thing to do with any surgery is to overdo it right away. It makes recovery much more difficult.

Look into physical therapy after your surgery. They can give your exercises to strengthen and prevent future damage.
  • The hardest part I think will be taking a break from yoga since I've been doing it regularly for a year now.  honestly I would probably wait even longer to get it repaired if it wasn't for us wanting to TTC again in a year.  I just don't want to worry about a hernia when I'm pregnant again and I really hope I don't get another one during the next pregnancy.

  • My dad had two hernia surgeries. His recovery time took a while. But part of that I believe is because he put off the sugeries for so long. His one scheduled surgery almost had to be turned into an emergency surgery because the pain got so bad. Had he not waited until they had gotten so bad, I believe his recovery time would have been faster. But in general he was back to moving around slowly within a few days but he couldn't do any heavy lifting for several and he wasn't able to drive for 1-2 weeks after the surgery. Again this could have been impacted by the amount of time he let pass before dealing with this issue.

Good luck and wishes for a speedy recovery.

My coworker had this during her second pregnancy. She couldn't figure out why she suddenly had an outie. Her OB suggested she have it fixed when she was done having children. I don't know how severe her's was but she said her OB told her it would be very minor.

  • Yeah, my concern is not getting it fixed and it getting worse and not being able to go thru surgery when I'm pregnant again.  When it's an emergency situation, it's usually a lot of pain because your intestine gets stuck in the hole.  Luckily I'm in no pain from it and never have been which is why i've been able to live with it for 3 years.  the doctor said it didn't get any bigger from last year which is good.  I stopped lifting weights at the gym and started yoga instead last year and I believe that's helped.
