Presidential Challengers! (John Adams spoilers, maybe)

It's always funny to warn about spoilers in a book like this, because it's non-fiction and we all know what happens, right?  Something really exciting happened to me yesterday, though!  I was reading about the 1800 election campaign between Adams and Jefferson and how ugly it all was, and I realized that I had no idea how that election came out.  I had no idea whether Adams served a second term or not.  Of course I know Jefferson was president after Adams, but I didn't know if it was in that election or the next one.  I was unreasonably excited about there being suspense in my John Adams book!

It's been interesting to watch the relationship between Adams and Jefferson change over the course of the book, too.  It seems like the advent of party politics just tore their friendship apart.  It makes me like Jefferson less.  But also makes me look forward to reading about him more.

  • Their friendship is so fascinating! I don't want to spoil anything, but I look forward to your thoughts once you finish JA.

Thank you for adding another layer of suspense to my book!  Now I'm totally curious how their friendship is going to evolve with Jefferson in office.  :)
  • I've read a lot of non-fiction on this era, and it's funny how certain books make you like either Adams or Jefferson, depending on the historian. Which one are you reading? (sorry if I missed this)

For Adams I'm reading McCullough.  When I get around to Jefferson, I'm planning to read Meacham.

I agree, though.  I haven't read all that much on this time period, but even within this book, my opinion of Jefferson, and of Franklin for that matter, has been vacillating.  Historians have their biases, just like everyone else, I suppose.  I think it would be hard to put that amount of time and energy into researching a book like this and not like the person you're writing about.  I'm not sure I'd be able to do it if I wasn't at least a little bit emotionally invested in the person I was writing about.  So then when it comes to other people committing some wrong against your main character, wouldn't you feel upset about it or tend to take it a nit personally, too?  It's an interesting dynamic, anyway.
  • I read Jon Meacham's Andrew Jackson bio and LOVED it, hopefully his Jefferson bio is as good!

  • It won a Pulitzer, so it can't be too bad, right?  I'm looking forward to it, but I'm planning to take a break and read some other (shorter) stuff before I get to it.
  • I love the spoiler alert. My husband was a history major in college and so he knows all the spoilers and I beg him not to tell me. :)

Yeah, I think that their friendship is fascinating.
