PCOS, what does this mean for me?

Hi, new to this board, H and I have not started TTC, but we've talked about that being part of our 2-3 year plan, and I'm beginning to wonder what Polycystic Ovary Syndrome could mean for us.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2010, I've had symptoms for more than a decade, but haven't thought about it much until recently. I haven't had any cysts, but I have several other symptoms, elevated hormone levels, painful acne, hirsutism, and heavy, long, frequent periods (21 day cycle with heavy periods lasting 8-10 days).  Most of my symptoms are controled fairly well on the pill, but I get really anemic after 3-4 cycles when I'm not on the pill.

I could be worried for nothing, but I wonder if we should start trying sooner rather than later.

Re: PCOS, what does this mean for me?

  • PCOS is a funny beast.  It can make it difficult to get pregnant, but not always.  I've never heard of the symptom you are describing about short cycles, heavy bleeding, because I fell/fall on the other side of the spectrum in terms of long cycles.  I would talk to my doctor if I were you and talk to her about starting ferratin supplementation to prevent anemia and if there is anything other than the pill you can do to help controle your symptoms.

There is a weekly PCOS check-in on this board.  You can post there for support and read others experiences.  Good luck.  Hopefully you have nothing to worry about :)

  • Are you tracking your cycles at all by temping?

  • H and I have not started TTC yet, so I'm still on Yaz, and therefore don't ovulate, so I don't think there would be a temp to track. right?

part of our discussion about starting a family in the next 2-3 years centered around my aging parents and wanting them to be a part of our children's lives for as long as possible. the only reason we decided not to start TTC now was money related, we'd like to take care of a few more SLs and get a little more stable before.  however, I'm beginning to worry that maybe we're wasting time?

But then again, like lindsayandjamie said, maybe we wouldn't have trouble at all?

  • It could mean it takes you 4.5 years to get pregnant. Or it could mean it takes you one month. Talk to a reproductive endocrinologist when you are ready to TTc.

  • I wouldn't begin TTC until you are fully ready.  Not because you aren't sure what PCOS will do to your TTC journey.  Some women with PCOS get pregnant on their first cycle, or 10th, and never have any problems.  Others do not have cycles or do not ovulate and have to seek treatment.  PCOS is different with everyone.
