Poor Editing

Or at least that is what I think is to blame. I read a book last week that was a cheapie from Kindle. It was a decent story, nothing fantastic but entertaining.
The only thing that really bothered me was her use of lied vs lay/laid.

She kept referring to the character as she "lied in bed". I am not perfect with spelling and grammer etc but it really irked me. I can't believe it never got picked up by her advance readers or editor or whatever.
Anyone else noticing this lately with their books? Does it bother you?

Re: Poor Editing

  • I had to stop reading Circle of Friends years ago because of punctuation problems.  They irritated me so much I couldn't concentrate on the book.

The Vince Flynn thrillers also had editorial problems.  Without even looking hard, my friend found at least 15 pretty obvious errors.

  • Yikes! Was it self-pubbed? Because a copy editor with a NY house should have caught that.

    I wrote this!
  • A lot of the self pubbed stuff I read has issues like that.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • I had to stop reading a self-published book not long ago because of the consistent use of an apostrophe to make plurals.  I mean, c'mon.  A third grader knows that you don't go hang out with four of your friend's.

But maybe not.  I have cousin's who are in high school, a cousin in college, and a other whom is first grade teacher and all of their FaceBook post's drive me batshit insane.

I want to correct all of their grammar all the time but it's not worth looking like an asshat.  Maybe they're autocorrects?

It was published by CreateSpace, which looks like a self-publishing thing.
I really have to start paying more attention to that kind of thing before picking up kindle cheapies.

I always say in my head, "people lie.  things lay" before I write one of those words.  lol!!!

(Edit - WTF happened to my siggy?  It was *just* there?!?!)

  • I totally stop reading books with consistent errors like that. If it's a one time thing, I'll keep going. If it happens repeatedly or with more than one word (example: their, there, they're), I'm done.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

  • This is exactly why I don't read self-pubbed unless it comes with an outstanding recommendation from someone I trust.

  • I just read a book where a character's name was spelled two different ways....on the same page.  Laurali vs. Laurelei (or something along those lines).

    It's annoying for sure.

Well both of those are wrong!!!  ;)

It's either Lorelei or Lorelai!  hahaha!!!

(If my siggy hadn't disappeared, you would have seen that my youngest is Lorelei!)
