Do you think it's fair to rate a book you haven't finished and got as an ARC?

I just started checking the reviews for the book I just finished and got as a galley.  I noticed there were a couple reviews where people gave it one star but didn't even finish the book and received it as an ARC.  I feel like that's a little unfair to rate a book so lowly that you received as a galley and didn't even finish.  Isn't part of receiving the ARC that you will read it and review it?

  • I don't know what the right answer is, but I don't think I'd rate it as an ARC if I didn't finish it.

  • I think it would be better not to give a rating, but mark it as DNF.

I received an ARC from GR years ago and it was horrible.  I DID finish it, but it was just a meandering bunch of nonsense without any kind of plot line whatsoever, if it wasn't an ARC I would have DNF.  When I went on GR I saw that others recieving ARCs had given it 4-5 stars and gave glowing reviews about how it was the most amazing thing ever.  I gave it 2 stars, wrote that it just wasn't for me without elaborating, and called it a day.

I have never gotten another ARC from GR - I sporadically enter the drawings when I'm bored.  I am convinced that this is why.

I wouldn't rate it either. I would leave a review though saying that I didn't finish it.
  • I did rate a book I had received from goodreads once without having finished it.  I did make it over halfway through and gave it 2 stars.  I didn't really think too much about rating it before I did, but maybe I should have?  I don't thing it was an ARC though since it had been published a couple months before I won it.  It was 90% the writing I had an issue with so there was no way the second half was going to save the book in any way.

I don't think that's a problem if it wasn't an ARC.  I've done that once or twice.  In my brain if feels different doing it to an ARC when they are really just trying to get it out there.

If I end up with an ARC I can't get through, I mark it as "did not finish" and don't give it a star rating. I usually do leave a mini review about why I chose not to finish.
I think this is the best option.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

  • I don't think it being an ARC makes much of a difference.  If I don't finish a book, I mark it DNF and don't rate it.  If I read the whole thing and hate it, I give it low stars.  I don't differentiate between ARCs and finished copies, but I also think it's personal preference.
