The Sourav dining table (World Market)

So...

I've been shopping for a new dining table set for a long time now. I keep backing off at the last second, because I have a hard time dropping so much money on something that might not hold up to our 5 kids and a very naughty beagle.

I think the Sourav table from World Market might be The One. I would get the table, two benches, and two chairs (one for each end). It should easily seat 8-10 people, which is what we're going for.

Please tell me if you own it, or have any thoughts on it. And, does anyone have any idea how often World Market puts on the big furniture sales? I just missed one.

Re: The Sourav dining table (World Market)

  • i almost thought that was the same table we got at world market. but i don't think they carry ours anymore (can't remember its name anymore). we got it during their "up to 50% off furniture sale" about 3 years ago. we love it. i think they have their furniture sales a couple times a year, but in addition i think they have separate dining room furniture sales, too. ask your local store, i'm sure they can advise.

  • Have you seen it in person? It has a very rough finish on the top, which is great for kids, but probably one of those "love it or hate it" things. It's not just distressed, it has a sort of machine roughed up look to it. If your kids ever do homework at the table, they would probably need to put something under their papers to write because the table is bumpy.

I am a huge fan of World Market, but when we were looking at tables there I wasn't a huge fan of the finish on the Sourav. We ended up finding a WM table on Craigslist that has been discontinued, but it looks almost like the Sourav except with a smoother finish.

I get WM emails all the time with discounts, and I think they have sales every couple months or so.

  • We purchased the Sourav about a month ago and are really liking it.  DH picked it out, and it wasn't my first choice originally, but it was a steal of a price and we needed something that would hold up well with regular use and children.  I got the table, 4 chairs and the bench for $699.  Now that we've had it for a little while, I really like it much more.  It has a very distressed top, so you really can't write directly on it or anything, but it doesn't show any scratches or wear.  Three adults can comfortably sit on the bench.  Oh, and it was super easy to put together!

  • We have that dining table! I wanted a big table that a lot of people could sit at. It is in our formal dining room. We have the two end chairs and two benches. I love it :)  We also have a 6 person table in our breakfast room that opens to seat 8 more people. We like to have lots of places for people to eat.

I have tons of pics of the dining table on my blog, link below. There is a pic in the most recent post, the IKEA shelves post, and the best pics are probably in the Christmas Self Timer post. I cant remember how much it was, we bought it 2 Thanksgivings ago.

  • Thank you all for your responses. Yes, I've seen the hand-planed finish. It's not what I had in mind initially...and then I looked at our current table. With five kids, I think we need a rougher finish. I will have to come up with a solution for the homework issue, though.
  • I LOVE the Sourav set and the roughness would be great with kids! Just buy a couple of clipboards. I have been wanting that set since my husband and I met in 2002 but we haven't had a house with a big enough space for it yet. When we're looking at houses, he'll actually say "Your table won't fit." It's almost a requirement for the next place we live. LOL!
  • I have the Sourav coffee table, and it still looks great after 3.5 years and 2 moves.  I think their furniture goes on sale pretty often so I would definitely wait for another sale!
  • I have the Sourav kitchen table, 4 chairs and 2 benches for sale- I know your post was from 2011, but worth a shot.  Please email me if you are still interested:  regangreene@me.com

    Thanks, Sara
