  • You left off pinching people. That's the only part I care about. ;) Otherwise, we haven't ever done anything for St Patty's day

I'm totally doing this at our family party on Sunday. It's going to be awesome! Though, not many people don't wear green to it.

  • Why was a Reuben sandwich not on this list?  It's the only thing I look forward to on St Patty's day.

Although we used to go into downtown Chicago for the St Patty's day parade in college.  Underage drinking, everyone handing you booze, loud music, and a green river.  It was always an interesting train ride back to my apartment.

  • I can't believe y'all haven't heard of that! Maybe it's a Texas thing? I dunno. I grew up doing that in school, church, family.. EVERYONE I know pinches! On St. P day when I was little, my dad would come in and start pinching us until we got up  :)

Here's a history on the pinching. I couldn't remember the history with it but now it's all coming back to me! In a nutshell, legend says that wearing green makes humans invisible to leprechauns so they can't kick/trip/pinch us. If you don't wear green, you get pinched to mimick a leprechaun "harming" you. :) It's silly, but fun! I used to wear something hidden (socks/undies) and then I'd get pinched but since I was wearing green, I got to pinch the person back 10 times! Cheating yeah, but whatever. We were kids. ;)

ETA: it's totally an American tradition and has no Irish roots from what I can find!

  • That is crazy some of you never heard of the pinching. Lol, I have always done that as long as I can remember. My Granny used to do that, like if she came over in the morning, and I hadn't put on my green clothes yet, she would pinch me. Ha ha awww, Granny. RIP :)

  • We rarely do anything for St. Patrick's Day.  It's also DH's birthday that day and he kind of hates that it's on SPD.  He said going out in college for "his birthday" always turned into his friends getting trashed and him ending up being the DD.  Last year for his 30th, I had a huge party and there wasn't a bit of green in the house...until people started showing up in all green and saying that I was a party pooper for wearing red.  Oh well.

  • That was my favorite part of the day in school.  We had to pinch on the sly, though, or else we'd get in trouble.  But the teachers knew what was going on...

There will be plenty of booze, food, and fun at my place Saturday.  My family is coming over and we are the family that plays Cards Against Humanity together (which is funny, because my mom is a PK).  It should be even more entertaining with a few Irish Car Bombs.

  • St Patty's day is more important to DH than his birthday. He takes the day off, shows up to his local at 11am when they open, has brunch and drinks beer and visits with people as they go in and out all day.

I can't imagine anything I would rather do less than sit in a bar for hours and hours, so I go home after work, walk the dog, eat dinner and then I go meet him at the pub for a drink when he's almost ready to come home.

  • DH and his friends have been going to the same local pub (Patrick's) for about 20-something years.  Most of them sit there ALL DAY. I went last year and it was actually really fun (cuz, ya know, when you drink all day, you never get crazy drunk. At least I don't). Luckily last year it was on a weekend. I think DH and I will stop by after work this year so we can say hi and DH can have his green beer and then just go home.
    imageimage
  • I always make a couple loaves of soda bread. And then sometimes, I make a couple more...

RAB, I used to try to trick people too! When I had braces, I would get green bands for March, then avoid wearing green clothes so I could show people my bands and pinch them back when they thought I wasn't wearing green.

Lots of people and crowds to navigate but everyone was already bombed so there was no money to be made and there was puke everywhere. I haven't really care much about it since then, but I'll wear green tomorrow to represent.
