22wk appt

Went pretty well. Reviewed the a/s and everything is fine, including my cervix which I was kinda freaked about. But she's concerned that my feet are swelling already. She wants me to cut out salt and see me back in three weeks. I honestly don't take in that much salt to begin with so I'm not sure if that's really going to help, but I'm willing to try. I'm just a little depressed bc I feel like my hope of giving birth in a birthing center instead of a hospital are going out the window. It's probably a little early to be such a Debbie downer, but that's how I feel. I did get to hear baby's heartbeat which was awesome and it was crazy strong and loud today!

Re: 22wk appt

  • Yay for getting to hear the heartbeat! That's always amazing. It's crazy the amount of sodium that is in all kinds of foods. I've been trying to watch sodium this pregnancy too and it's difficult.

  • I'm so glad everything looks good! FWIW I had really bad swelling from 22ish weeks on and still gave birth at a birthing center (it was attached to the hospital, but still separate, if that makes sense). So don't give up hope yet!

Things that may help: Increase water intake, decrease sodium (check labels, they put it in everything), keep your feet up, and lay down instead of sitting when possible. Sitting ALWAYS made it worse for me, and keeping my legs up only did so much, laying down did wonders!

  • That makes me feel better @sgautschi. About the swelling. Ours is a freestanding birthing center with no hospital affiliation. Granted it's down the street from one in case something emergent happens, but there are no doctors on staff. Just midwives and doulas. They only take low risk pregnancies. If you become. Risk for any kind of intervention they have to refer you back.

  • Not that I don't love and trust my doctor. I just don't feel a hospital is necessary for birth. But that may be the route we go. We'll make the final decision after my follow up in three weeks.

  • I don't know why swelling would keep you from a birth center unless it was associated with elevated BP. I had swelling starting early on and no one was worried about it because my BP was always normal. Hopefully your swelling doesn't get too bad and you can still keep your plans for birth.

  • I'm sorry you've started to swell. I don't have any experience with that, but hopefully it won't keep you from your birth center delivery
  • I am glad everything else went well and hopefully you will still be able to use the birthing center!

  • I would suggest laying on the floor with your legs straight up the wall to help with drainage.  It apparently does wonders for lower body swelling. Also, lots and lots of water.  Good luck! Hopefully it doesn't stall your plans :)

Thanks all. I think the birthing center probably isn't going to happen. I got an email this mirning that my insurance has 0 out of network coverage and it would cost $5000. In network is covered 100%, I just can't justify that for a delivery that would possibly make me happy, but could also end up in a hospital anyways. Bummer

:( I'm sorry to hear this!! There's nothing worse than having a plan taken away from you without you even really getting to decide on it.

I hope your swelling goes down a bit so you and your doc can both relax.

  • Thanks lucky. I found a gym that's 10$ a month that I'm going to sign up for, because I can't use the equipment in the house anymore. Therefor, I haven't really been exercising too much. I think that may help too. Like one of those stationary bikes (not the kind for spinning class).
