So we usually get between $1,000 and $2,000 back each year from taxes.
I just filled out the forms for this year, and it's saying we OWE $1500! I can't figure out what changed so drastically for such a big swing.
We didn't change the number of deductions or anything like that, but it seems like maybe our employers were just taking out less? I'm stumped.
Does anyone have experience using the H&R Block Second Check? From what I understand, they have someone look at your return and see if you left anything on the table. I'm thinking maybe I should do that. Maybe I missed something big somehow?
Or how much does it usually cost to hire someone to do them for you? I've done them myself for years, but now I'm doubting myself.
Re: Taxes. Grrrr.
Also, you're middle America so you pay the most. yay!
We have relatively complex taxes so we pay H&R Block to do our taxes and it costs like $300. It sucks, but we have this one form we have to do and it's expensive. We haven't gotten ours done yet this year but I'm pretty sure we'll have to pay again -- although it better not be $2,500.
I've always done ours though. This is thankfully the last year that we owe. 2500, ugh.
I just started mine last night. I bought TurboTax Premier since we have a rental. There's so much stuff about the rental property that I had no clue! It started asking me questions about how much DH paid for the house when he bought it, and what he paid for surveys, appraisals, and all that stuff. So, I'm having to go through all of DH's papers to find the morgage from that house from 2007!
I do think we'll get about 3K back. That would be nice. Except it's already spent! Paying off his car loan ($1800) and then will get put towards IUIs (if needed)

I was told it has to do with tax stuff being different this year. Not sure what tho. So even if everything was exactly the same as last year money wise for you the amount you get will be different.
I used to work at H&R Block. The second look is only free for the previous 3 years tax returns. So for this year, it would only be free for 2012, 2011, and 2010, and its only free if you have them file your current (2013) return.
Keep an eye out though because some years they do offer a free second look on the current years return the last couple weeks of tax season, but it is only if you've already filed. Also, if they do find errors on your return, they charge around 100 dollars to amend.
I'm tempted to suggest we do the Second Look because I'm nervous he missed something we could've claimed for the new house, but I feel like he'd get pissed since he's an accountant and took tax courses.
