Question about selling stuff

So I have some stuff I need to sell (video games, table lamps, large rug, puzzles, H's school books, wedding dress etc...) I'm hesitant to sell video games on Craigs list because I don't want people having to come into my house so I can prove that the games work, so I'd like to try Ebay or Amazon for things like this. I've never used either of them before, so I'm not too sure how they work. I thought I'd ask if anyone's used Amazon or Ebay to sell stuff before and how it works. I do have a paypal account set up. Do the websites get a cut of the sell price? Would I pay for shipping?

Re: Question about selling stuff

  • I have sold stuff on amazon in the past. It is very simple, you just follow the steps. You will get an email when the item sells and you have two to three business days to ship.  You can choose to send to amazon and they will ship it for you or you can ship the item yourself. You get an allotted amount of money for each item, for shipping, but sometimes it cost a little more than what you get. You can list items for free, and if they do not sell you can take them down at no cost.

The only thing I didn't like about amazon was their fee's/commissions were a little high. It depends on the price of the item as to what fee you pay. The fee comes right out of the amount you list it for. Just make sure you read amazons return policy.
  • I've sold stuff to used cd stores and I know they take video games. You might not get as much if you sold them yourself, but it would be easier for you.
  • Its been years since i've sold stuff. I really need to do the same so i just looked into it again. Its free to list stuff on ebay but you pay 10% of the sale price plus shipping as a fee to ebay - they just take it out of your profits. You charge what you want and you can choose to do free shipping and just work it into the price of the item or charge a shipping fee - its up to you.

Tradesy takes 9% but the you have to pay 3% to move the money over to paypal otherwise its just credit on their site. But if you are having trouble selling it on ebay - it may sell quicker on a site thats more targetted for those buyers.

  • I've sold on Amazon before and had luck going through there.I much prefer them to Ebay and I've never had a bad experience with Amazon. Ebay will also charge you some fees there, but I haven't sold anything on Amazon lately so I don't know if their fees are comparable.

I actually just recently sold an unused gift card on ebay (my first time selling something there, but I've bought lots of things there before) but I didn't have any luck with that. The item sold, and I was told I had ship the item as soon as the payment was "pending"  but that the funds wouldn't be in my PayPal account until the item was delivered (as per the delivery confirmation record). Well, it's been a month and the payment has still not gone through and I can't seem to get my money--they say the payment is being processed by PayPal but PayPal says it's an ebay issue. Grrr...I'm basically thinking I'm out what the money I would have gotten for the gift card ($50) plus the cost of shipping ($5)....I even used the Ebay printable shipping label which cost more than going to post office because they said I'd get the money faster.

Anyway...my advice is to go with Amazon. Their system is much more straightforward. Good luck!
  • I've used e-bay for selling stuff. Photos are key for selling and providing the best descriptions possible. For things you can, go to the post office & figure out which flat rate box will fit best for that item. This way you can advertise what the postage rate will be & it won't be a guessing game for you trying to figure out the weight, size & the to & from. Make sure to limit your buyers to the US only else postage could get crazy expensive. There will be a fee to e-bay upon the sale of the item based on the price you sell it for. If you don't sell it, no charge (assuming you don't use any of the extra options in your ad that cost extra). I've had good experience buying & selling that way, you reach a nice large audience.

For the lamps, rugs etc, those would be harder to do via e-bay. I'm not saying you couldn't sell that way, but shipping might be a bit of headache. For that I would suggest craigslist or search facebook if there are any buy/sell groups for your area. We have a few in my area. When selling those items you can always meet in public places like the police station or inside a fast food resturant (then you can show them the lamp works).

    Good luck!!!

  • I have sold on eBay a few times. You don't have to pay for shipping but it can help your sale if you opt to. Yes, eBay takes a portion of your sale and then you pay like $1 or $2 to get a basic listing on the site.

Personally, I feel that craigslist is easier for furniture, rugs, etc. Why don't you just sell the video games to a used video game store?

The big drawback to eBay is that it's HUGE. People could be searching for an item and literally get 3,000 hits. At least on craigslist it's a smaller pool of items for sale. If you are in a metro area, I would recommend Craigslist.

  • Thanks all. I think I will stick with Amazon for the school books and video games. (I've sold back games to Game Stop before and they give pratically nothing back for the games. I will see what others are selling them for on Ebay/Amazon. I will do the larger items on Craigs list.

I love Game Stop but they are such a rip-off for trade-ins!

I sell on a couple local buy/sell facebook groups. It is similar to Craigslist.

Ebay has always been hit or miss with getting anything back. I've never tried Amazon.

I actually just sold a bunch of video games on Ebay and my Wii. I have moved on to the Xbox now. I like Ebay because I can pay for and print the shipping labels directly from there and there are a variety of shipping options. I think Ebay takes something like 3.5% of the sale. I'm not exactly sure. I suppose I could do the calculation. I had a total of $280 sold and ebay's cut is something like $27.

Video games seem to sell well but DVDs not so much. maybe a dollar or two. I basically am using it as a means to clear the clutter of DVDs. Good luck with whatever you decide.

eta: video games and books can be shipped via media mail with USPS so that saves a bit on the shipping costs.
  • Also, if you're a new seller to Ebay it can take up to 21 days for the funds to become available on Paypal so if you are in a big hurry for the money this may not be the way to go.
  • I've sold a BUNCH of textbooks on Amazon.  Wait until the beginning of a school semester - August or December - to list.  Then undercut the lowest-price by about 5-10%, and it will sell.

One fall I had 13 books to sell.  I sold 12 of them in under 6 hours by using that method.  I was also very honest and detailed about any writing, highlighting, etc. in them.  And I did disclose where I went to school and the grade I got in the course.  The only problem with selling them so quickly was the day I had to pack them to ship - doing 12 at once was kind of a lot.
