Pitt Grads: would you recommend it?

Hello! My nephew is from out of state and he is visiting colleges now. This weekend is Pitt. If you went there, would you recommend it? Pros and cons? Thank you!

I did my undergrad and grad work at Pitt and my youngest sister just graduated last April.

I think Pitt is an acquired taste. If you are looking for a college campus feeling like say Penn State, Pitt is probably not the best option. If you are looking for things besides school, it is a good option. I loved it, but a lot of people don't because it is in the city and really doesn't have a traditional campus vibe (football is not on campus, have to bus to Heinz Field, spread out, etc.).

I very much agree with this (I didn't attend Pitt but worked in admissions both at the undergrad and grad level there). It's a wonderful school, but it has a different feel than a campus that's more suburban. I work on that type of campus right now and it feels more like it's own little world - where Pitt you're part of a large city. Good luck to him!

Ditto Kris. I commuted so I can't offer any insight into campus life.

I enjoyed my experience there but it is a very large school. A lot of the 101 type classes are enormous lectures coupled with recitation sessions with TAs (at least they were 18 years ago when I attended). I liked the pseudo-anonymity but I know that's a turn off for a lot of people.

I agree with Ryan, that a lot of freshman classes were big but as I got into my major, most of my classes maxed out at 30 people.

I did live on campus as did my sister even though we were local. She was greek and I wasn't and I will say her experience was definitely different than mine.

I adore Pitt, but I'm totally biased because I really enjoyed my experience here in undergrad, met my BFF, met my husband, work here now, etc..

But it's really a great school, academically-speaking (i'm not even sure I'd get in if I had to apply today!) and for me, the campus was great. I remember visiting smaller schools and feeling like I couldn't picture myself there at all, but I know some people absolutely love that aspect of smaller colleges. The football thing does kind of stink (they were still up on the hill when I first started here) but other than that, I think even though it's part of a larger urban area, the campus is still a bit in a bubble, at least when you're a student.

I did Pitt for grad school and went right up the street for undergrad. I hated the rural, traditional campuses and wanted a more urban setting, and I thought Pitt was great for that. I think it really depends on what you want for a school setting.
