TMI Time about AF

This will be very TMI, but I'm debating on whether or not to be concerned.

AF came yesterday afternoon.  The last year and a half since getting off BC, most of my periods have been started with Provera. They were usually pretty light, and the 1 other cycle I O'd on my own AF was pretty light too.  The 9 years I was on BC, they were very light also and didn't have much problems with cramps.

This one is completely different.  It's been all clots.  Barely any actual blood, but I tried using a tampon yesterday and got severe cramps.  So I changed it and noticed that it was blocking the clots and not soaking anything up.  The cramps are also very rough and won't go away.  H bought me Midol last night because they hurt so bad, and I haven't taken that in a very long time.

Is this something I should call my Dr about?  Remembering back, I was put on BC because my periods were so heavy and I got bad cramps.  But I never remember clots.

This is just weird.  You would think it would've been like this on my 90 day cycle, not a 60 day cycle.

  • Well, called the nurse line.

They had me e-mail them my chart for this cycle and describe how many and how big the clots are.  They have a hunch that it's another CP based on how long my LP was. So if the clotting doesn't stop by tomorrow morning then they want me to go get Beta's drawn to make sure.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a CP, since I tested quite often and never got a positive.  I'm praying so hard the clotting goes away and I don't need to get tested.

  • I had one cycle like this and it was pretty unsettling. There were a lot of fairly large clots (though, I do have clots every cycle that is less than 50 days. Just not very many and pretty small). I never had an explanation for it though... so I realize this is no help. Like @LooneyLife mentioned, I've heard this can be a 'normal' thing to happen, but it's good you called in since it's worrisome for you. I wonder if it has something to do with your recent diet change? It seems like this cycle since doing the PCOS diet and going GF has been abnormal for you.

  • Hopefully it goes away. I'm glad you called though! For me, clots (lots and big) are the norm. If I didn't have them, I'd be confused lol. Maybe since this was a "natural" (i think?) period and it was 60 days, that's why you're getting them? Like I said, I get them all the time, but if it's been more than 60 days, I get lots more/bigger ones. I'm not much help though because it's pretty much a massacre down there when AF is around... Hopefully they'll clear up asap!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • @rockabye The other natural AF I got was after a 90 day cycle.  It was nothing like this.
I've had a couple others on non-ovulatory cycles, but those were very light.

This is just so odd.  The only other time I've had clots like this was during our first loss, which was at 5weeks.

What you're describing happens to me about every 4th or 5th cycle (even on BCP). I did ask and the doctor wasn't worried, so it's possible it's nothing/'normal'. It's good that you called the nurse line to make sure, and that they're keeping an eye on it - but don't freak yourself out too much.

  • Huge clots are normal for me, but not for everyone. You made the right decision by calling. It could just be a one time thing, but could be something more serious.
  • Nothing new to add, but I hope you feel better and/or get some answers soon!

  • Clots are the norm for me, even having regular cycles now. I wouldn't call unless a pad is soaked through before the hour is up.
