How Long Does Your Period Last?

I'm asking because I'm starting to have a sneaking suspicion that there might be something up with thickness (or thinness, really) of my uterine lining. My periods used to last about 4-5 days with the first three decently heavy; however, ever since starting Clomid (even the last couple of times of O'ing on my own), my periods are only lasting 2-3 days max, with me only needing to use tampons the first 2 days.

When getting monitored on Clomid, I got U/S at beginning of cycle and then B/W to make sure I ovulated but none during the treatment itself. I don't know if I'm grasping at straws but I'm trying to figure out why the eff I'm not getting KU if I'm ovulating and Tom's S/A was "normal" and my HSG was "normal".

Anywho, I'm just curious at this point. Once I've lost about half the weight I need to, I'm going to switch RE's and then I'm assuming they'll go through the B/W, HSG, and S/A again and I can ask about it then...

Re: How Long Does Your Period Last?

  • Mine were always like 4-5 days, but that included days of spotting.  So they were only kinda heavy for 2, sometimes 3 days and the rest was all spotting.  When you were taking Clomid, did they measure the lining?

  • Mine was always about 7 days and heavy (lighter when I was on BCPs).  After our IUI a year ago, it has become much heavier and lasts closer to 10 days. At first I wondered if it was the side effect of one of the drugs, but I really think it may just be my advanced age.

  • With Provera they're usually 5-6 days and quite heavy. On my medicated cycles, I want to say they were only moderately heavy but also 5-6 days. On the rare occasion AF shows up on her own (and how I was pre-bcp) they're usually 7-9 days and SUPER heavy. I had lots of ultrasounds throughout my Clomid and my injectables cycles where they monitored lining and growth.

Mine is2-3 days and has pretty much been that way since I've been off BC. I have 1 day where it is HEAVY and then the other 2 are light days. I had the pelvic u/s done and my uterine lining is fine. My doctor said it's completely fine for me.

off BCP I spot for a few days before and after my period. I have been having 2-3 days of light flow only, medicated or provera induced it is the same. Even last cycle when my lining was great and they cancelled me, I still only had really 2 days of light flow but lots of spotting days.

  • When I was on BCP, I would have 2 or 3 days of medium to heavy flow and then 2 or 3 days of light flow or spotting. Now, I'm off BCP but on Metformin and my periods are completely different. I have one day of heavy/medium flow and a day or 2 of light flow or spotting and then I am done. Last cycle was slightly different in that I had a few more days of spotting both before I hit medium flow and after.

I called my obgyn after my first post-BCP period because I wasn't even sure if I should count it as a period. I was getting ready to take Provera when I started so I wasn't sure if I should still take it. My obgyn said to count it and its been that way for the last 2 or 3 cycles now.

  • They did an initial u/s before each round of Clomid but not during so I don't think they would be able to notice if the Clomid affected the lining.

I think I'm just trying to find a reason why Clomid makes me ovulate but NOT get pregnant. Like I said in my OP, I guess I will just focus on the weight loss and have the new RE go through the whole thing again.

    Thanks ladies!

  • What is the percentage of a Clomid cycle resulting in pregnancy?  Isn't it pretty low?  My RE pretty much told me that Clomid was a waste of time and money and that the side effects weren't worth it.

Now I know women get pregnant by using Clomid all of the time but I don't think the stats are that great, so really there may be nothing wrong and you're just falling on the crappy side of the stats.

  • That's a good point, Xan. I thought the stats were low for making women ovulate - I would think that if Clomid makes you ovulate, your chances should be the same as any other "regular" couple? Is that wrong? lol

I've basically resigned myself to IUI/IVF (my RE said IVF really makes the best sense) but I couldn't help hoping I wouldn't need it.

Mine last anywhere from 10-14 days. I never have any super heavy days, but about 4 moderately heavy, 3-4 moderate and 2-3 light but more than spotting. I ovulate every month and usually get my period every 27-29 days.

I hope you get some answers.

How many cycles of Clomid have you done?  I definitely would request that they monitor you better to check your lining next time just in case.

If you are going to do the Clomid again, I would ask for one during to check the lining.  I know that on my round of Femara my lining wasn't thick enough and they had to prescribe me something to help thicken it.

  • I have read that Femara has a higher rate of success among women with PCOS than Clomid. I don't know if that makes a difference in your case though since you are already ovulating on Clomid. Have you discussed Femara at all with your RE? Or is that not really an option?

  • At this point my RE and I decided that it doesn't really make sense to continue with Clomid or other ovulation-inducing meds. They make me ovulate but pregnancy hasn't been achieved and I really don't want to fuck with the potential risks associated with elongated Clomid use.

  • My RE told me that Clomid basically puts a non-ovulating woman at the same conception percentage of a "normal" woman. So, from my understanding, it does nothing for your stats unless you're like me and don't ovulate at all. If you DO ovulate though, I'm not sure if that ups your % or not.

Clomid made me ovulate once and I just didn't get preg. RE said everything looked absolutely perfect, just wasn't our month. I didn't ovulate on the second round and am not "allowed" to do Clomid again b/c of crazy side effects so I don't know if it would've worked later on. Sucks. :(

  • I have 1 day of heavy flow and a day or two of spotting after that but I'm pre- menopausal.

  • My periods are usually anywhere from 3-4 days of actual flow with an extra bonus day of spotting.
    This almost exactly.
  • What RAB said. Clomid just makes you ovulate and therefore only gives you a 20% chance of getting pregnant each cycle. I don't think the numbers reflect the # of pregnancies resulting from Clomid, just the % of how many women ovulate on Clomid. I never ovulated before Clomid so technically all four Clomid cycles were successful because they made me ovulate.

As far as the period question, my cycles are normally 15-20 days and all heavy. After my first two rounds my period was definitely lighter, but they brought my whole cycle down from 100+ days to 35-40. So I'm not sure if it was the Clomid or if it was the length between periods if thy makes sense.
  • Mine are pretty heavy 2-3 days, and light the next 2-3 days. My period can last 5-7 days (usually I have spotting the day before the heavy flow)
  • Mine were always seven full days through adolescence and using bc. When we finally started ttc and i was off bc for like six months it went down to like 3 days. I asked my obgyn about it bc I was weirded out, though appreciative. She said it was normal for me bc everything else was still like clockwork. But feel free to ask just to ease your mind. Better safe than sorry.
