Kind of random Disney World question

At what age do you think kids stop believing the characters are real (not just people dressed up)?  Somebody had mentioned to me that her son, who is 6, says they are just people dressed up.  I was shocked!  I thought maybe 8 or 9 years old.  We took the girls to Disney on Ice and they both had so much magic in their eyes.  Waving and yelling hi to all the characters.  And being totally amazed that Ariel, Minnie, whoever else...were waving back.  It makes me sad that the magic might be lost before we get to Disney.

  • Noah knows that it's people dressed up in the suits (he's almost 9), but I also don't think that means the magic is lost.   He still likes to see the characters and hug/high five them.  I also can remember going to Disney when I was in the 6th grade and I had the autograph book and my brother and I stood in line to get autographs.  It was still fun/magical for me even at that age.
  • EJ totally believed last year when we went. So she was 5.  Sometimes when we watch a show she asks me if someone is real.  The latest was the muppets.  Which was harder to answer. Cause they are a real puppet. Not  just a cartoon drawing of something.
  • Jake definitely believed in October when we were there, he was almost 6.

Yeah, some of the characters are tricky.  I wasn't going to try to convince our oldest that Nemo was really a fish at Disney on Ice.  I mean, the fish had human legs.  She knew that wasn't really a fish.

  • I think it depends on the kid. Dd is almost 6 and she questions this stuff a lot now. When she was 4.5 at Disney she didn't at all. I think if we went now she would ask a lot of questions but she would still believe.

I know when we saw the Disney Christmas parade she asked if they were real. Particularly she kept asking me if Elsa was real and if she really had powers.

But dd questions everything. Other kids might not.

  • DIsney has some sort of magic when you're there. When we did the wine/dine I was amazed at the at least 45 minute long line, consisting of only adults, waiting to meet mickey and minnie.

Even if the kids know a person is in the costume, it doesn't make them any less fun to meet :)

  • Lanna wasn't that into them at 6, but she wasn't cynical about it. And she still believes in Santa and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy... so it may just be that she's not very big on the Disney characters themselves.
