Moral dilemma/ question

Ok so as most of you know I am a teacher. Well I got a new job this year when we moved to nc to be closer to DH college. I have had to take a mat leave already and missed a week due to my grandmothers passing. I hate missing days. That being said, one Friday in a couple weeks the original schedule had a "optional" workday. Because of snow days it's been changed to a half day for students. We had already planned a trip to where our parents lived that weekend leaving around noon to give us plenty of time for the normally 6 hr journey. Well the school decided to make it a mandatory workshop day. When I asked my principal about it, I was told that "I couldn't be excused, but if I was sick....." My thing is that I have never been one of those teachers that misuses sick days. I feel guilty thinking about it, but I also really want to take dd to meet the family she hasn't met. Everyone's so excited we're coming... I really don't know what to do. They have made it clear the half day is going to be a fun waste of a day (with activities, etc) but I hate to miss the prof development workshop.... Wwyd??? Iam torn, but leaning toward being "sick..." Help!!!!

  • I would be "Sick..."

    I'm a bad influence though. :)
  • If I wasn't tenured yet, I would be at work.

It depends on where you stand with career vs. Family. For a long long time I would always put my career first. It got me to where I want to be work wise. Now I'm starting to prioritize family more but it's hard for me. I don't know what I would do in your situation but if it is a new job, you already told your superior you had plans and you've already called out for other things I would probably go to work.

  • I would have a hard time calling in sick.
  • I also feel bad taking sick days when I'm not sick. Almost like karma will come back and I will need that sick day.

  • I'm thinking of working the half day with my students and then taking a half-day sick day for the prof. Development. Then in the computer we could pretend it was a dr appt or something but I wouldn't have to miss time with my kids. That was the plan when it was a half day- half work day. I don't know though.

  • If you already asked for the day off I feel like it is going to be very suspicious to take a sick day. For me it wouldn't be worth it.

I didn't ask for the day off, I asked what the plan was for that day because of my plans. I told her my plan was to work. She suggested the "sick". I haven't really talked to her anymore about that but I fully planned to work the half day. I just really hate to miss a required "professional development workshop" but they don't have solid plans for what it is about yet.

  • I talked to dh and he said it didn't matter if we got there a little later so I texted my principal and told her I would be at the workshop. She then called me and told me she was so glad to have an employee that actually cared about being where they were supposed to be and not blowing things off. She didn't want me to stress and to do whatever I felt I needed to do. Ill probably stay for part of the professional development and maybe leave an hour early. That way I will get the gist of what I'm supposed to get but will not be too late getting off. I don't want to take any days off because I feel like I need to do my job. They didn't hire me to take days off. But I appreciated the vote of confidence from my principal. It made me feel better. She and I have always had a good relationship though.

Wow, no tenure? How did that go over with everyone? I would be scared for my life every day if I didn't have tenure. As a music teacher I already fear that I could be cut anyways so every spring is a scary time for me. I know maybe it's not rational but I do fear the worst most of the time.

Teachers are fighting it tooth and nail. The teachers who have tenure will keep it for 5 more years but the schools are required to pick 25% of tenured teachers and give them a "raise" over 5 years and take their tenure away. Any new teachers to nc are not eligible for tenure at all. They also cut the extra pay for masters degrees starting this year. Nc is trying to run off teachers in my opinion.

This is why we aren't planning on sending our kids to the public schools (we are in Wake County).  They give the hard working teachers zero respect and no compensation for the work they do.  It's ridiculous.  They wonder why grades aren't good?  Because they're running off all the good teachers.  Where in NC are you?

We're going to do charter schools. We can't live where we do and afford for me to SAH, especially now since I'm almost done with my master's and have all those student loans on top of my previous. Luckily in our area we have a ton to choose from.

I wish we had more choices. We have a couple low quality private religious schools and that's it. Plus side is when dh is out of school I will be able to sah. And there are a ton of homeschool groups here.

I really hope by the time we send our kids to schools things will be a lot better in NC.
