IUD Removal Question

Hey All,

Did anyone else have a Mirena IUD removed? What did AF look like for you? They warned me it may be abnormal but last month was totally normal but this month, I haven't had any PMS symptoms and I'm due.

Any help/thoughts would be great!

Re: IUD Removal Question

  • Did you test? Because you're likely pregnant based on the odds.

  • You started TTC this cycle, correct?  I would pee on a test.

Although my first cycle off hormonal BC was exactly 28 days.  After that the sh*t hit the fan and they were never like that again.  So you could be pregnant, or your body could be still trying to regulate some.

  • Were you charting in any way shape or form? If you don't know when you O'd, you don't know if your cycle was different (this is the case for a lot of people coming off any form of BC).

My cycles were pretty "normal" my first 2 months off BC (right around 28-30 days like when I was on BC), but after that they varied significantly (my 3rd cycle off BC was 44 days).

It can take several months for some women to return to normal after an IUD removal, especially with Mirena as it contains hormones.

I thought I O'd - but it's never been something I looked for or thought of really (been on BC since I was 18 and this is my first time TTC). This month, I tracked barely on the M.Cycles App. I'll take a test and see what it says. We figured since it was CD 21 or so, it was unlikely - I mean I know it could "always happen" but the literature and statistics of it had me thinking it was too late in the cycle.

    Thanks all!

What was CD21? When you think you Od? Because that's early/norm O time for me (usually CD 21-26 or so), and plenty of other ladies here have O'd way later (I've O'd as late as CD30!).

Check out FF and their tutorials and FAQs. A 28-day cycle might be touted as the average/norm, but it's by no means the rule.

CD21 was when me and H DTD but thought we were late in the cycle. Since that was only 11 days ago - should I wait to take a test? I'm definitely going to read a lot of FF tonight. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • I've never had an IUD, but the answer to this question depends on if it was hormonal BC or not.

If you think AF is late, you should probably test. If you still don't have AF a week later, take another test. Repeat until AF shows, you get a BFP, or you hit 60+ days (in which case, call your doc).

There is a very small amount of levonorgestrel in the Mirena IUD.

  • When I had my first Mirena removed, I got my period two days later. It was like the flood gates had opened. I bled pretty heavily for about 10 days before it tapered off. My cycles didn't settle down and become consistent until a few months later.

I'll let you know if the same thing happens when I get my current Mirena removed in a few months.
