NBR: Makeup Question

Settle a debate for me:

Do you put eyeliner on before or after you put eye shadow on?

Does your answer change if you're wearing gel eyeliner?

Re: NBR: Makeup Question

  • I usually put eyeliner on first because of the look I'm going for.  I think it depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

  • Eyeliner then shadow for me. I feel like the shadow seals the liner in, if that makes any sense whatsoever. I have never worn gel eyeliner.

  • I follow a beauty blogger (because I'm clueless about makup application and have to watch others do it) and she always seems puts hers on after.  Is there a trick or something to putting on liner?  No matter how steady my hand is I always look ridiculous with liner on.

  • I put eyeliner on after my eye shadow.  I've never used gel eyeliner.

  • It depends on the liner I'm using.  If I'm using Avon's glimmersticks, I'll do liner first then shadow to tone it down.  If I'm doing my normal makeup, I use the darker shadow as a liner over the lighter.  I have an angle brush that I wet and use with the shadow.

This. (Except I've never used glimmersticks, are they awesome?) Regular eyeliners I put on first, but Iusually use darker or gold eyeshadow as a liner, and that goes on last, with a brush.

  • After...  always.  I use liquid 99% of the time.  I can't imagine smudging my perfect line with shadow.

My first job was actually in a makeup studio.  I was always taught to do it after... and that is what I did when I was doing makeup on someone.  :)    I don't to much anymore.  Maybe 2-3 brides a summer just for fun.  (And tips if they feel generous!)

  • I usually do shadow after, to blend it.  I'm not really looking for a perfect line - I don't want someone to actually SEE the black line, I just want to create the effect.

I'm smudger, too. That's why I like using eyeshadow so much. by the end of the day it all just blends together.

Speaking of Avon - Do any of you sell it? I want to purchase from a consultant, but I don't know any.

Edited to add: I know I can find one on the site, but  prefer helping someone I know, if I can.

  • I do it both ways depending on the look I'm going for. If it's a smokey, dark eye, I'll do shadow first, then liner so it stands out. If it's more natural or neutrals, liner first, then shadow over to blend.

    @denmanam sells Avon, I think.

I always put eyeliner on after shadow, then smudge with my fingertip.  I feel like I have more control when I use my fingers, plus they're cleaner than sponge applicatiors.  I tried gel eyeliner a couple times, but it makes me look like Cleopatra and completely overdone for my life.  Maybe one of these days I'll have someplace fancy to go!

Interesting that there's a split!  I'd never heard of applying eye liner after eye shadow until a makeup blogger mentioned it. It seems so messy to me. Wouldn't your pencil or eyeliner brush get all gunky with eye shadow if you applied liner afterward?

I've never done a smoky eye.  I like them.  I think they look good on others.  But they intimidate me so I've never tried one.

  • I put gel eyeliner on before eyeshadow. For pencils or using dark eyeshadow as a liner, put it on over eyeshadow and then brush a little of my eyelid color of eyeshadow over it to set it.

Practice.  I've also found that if I lean my elbow against something, it keeps my arm from moving too much which leads to a straighter line.

No one's life is on the line here, you guys! There's nothing to be scared of! Just play around with it. Try using dark shadow as liner...it's not as dramatic.

  • I almost always do liner after eyeshadow. For every day, I'll use dark shadow with an angled brush so that it's a softer line. For going out or just to feel more done up, I'll do a dark pencil. I've never tried lqiuid though. I've also done a really bright eye liner with just mascara and no shadow.

I agree with the dark shadow. I am seriously godawful with a real eyeliner; gel, pencil, or otherwise. It's always wonky and way overdramatic for my tastes. But if you run a wet angled eyeliner brush through some dark shadow it's super easy, is pretty forgiving, and looks more natural. I'm not very adventurous either but it's easier to try things when you're not planning on going out. You're allowed to wipe it all off when you're done.
