Recommendations: Tile Stores and Thrift Stores

Can anyone recommend a tile store?  I am trying to pick out a new backsplash for our kitchen.  I am not having any luck finding anything thing that I like, although so far I've only really looked at Lowes/Home Depot because I'm not sure where else to look.  Has anyone had luck anywhere that they would recommend?

Also, are there any good thrift stores around?  We are repainting our downstairs because I am bored with the way that I have things.  I am hoping to find some interesting pieces that I can refurbish - I'm not really sure what exactly I'm looking for, but something like a new table for our foyer, new wall decor, etc.

TIA!

  • I have not been in there yet, but there is a Tile Shop next to Hobby Lobby in Robinson.

Honestly, I would look at Craiglist for new-to-you furniture or Estate Sales are awesome for furniture. I follow Morning Star Estate Sales on FB as well as Pittsburgh Estate Sales. A lot of times they post pictures and details of what they are selling, especially larger items. Craigslist is a great place to find estate sales too.

  • I have been to the Tile Shop. It is huge! I would suggest going there.  I don't have a suggestion about furniture, though. Good luck!
  • Meghan, we had great experience at Tile and Designs on Spahr street in Shadyside.

We bought 2 tons of tile there when we did our bathroom, and they were really helpful. We also used them for our decorative glass tile in the bathroom and our kitchen. Great selection, helpful designers.

We also looked at Accent on Tile in Bloomfield and The Tile Collection on Bigelow. They had nice selection as well, but weren't quite as helpful.

  • Do you have a St Vincent De Paul store out near you?  I've found some good (and cheap) furniture finds there in the past.
  • I got my first Craigslist deal this past weekend!  An old china cabinet to use as a bookcase/shelf in the entry way.

We got our bathroom tile from a place called Pape Flooring in the south hills. We will work with them again I am sure.  next may be the entry way flooring, as the slate there has some issues. Since it is just the floor, I will probably let them install it where as the last time we had our contractor do it as he was doing the rest of the bathroom.
  • Someone I knew in Pgh is really into the 70s  look, and will buy furniture off CraigsList and refurbish it, if needed, then resell in a store...looking now to see the name of it... Antiques on Ohio River. Might be worth checking it out?

  • Definitely check out the Antique Mall on Ohio River Blvd, they have great stuff and are actually pretty reasonable but it is not the most organized place. They are also willing to negotiate.
