I'm in search of a new foundation

My love affair with bare minerals has ended. I feel like in order to get the coverage I need, I end up looking powdery.  So what do you use?  Why do you love it?  I have combination skin/oily t-zone so bonus points if you can recommend something that works well for that.

Re: I'm in search of a new foundation

  • I have been as well since mine is discontinued. I have tried SO many in my quest. If you have questions on specific ones I could probably give some info.

Do you want a medium coverage and you said you are oily? Do you want a liquid? Do you have problems with foundations staying on? That's my biggest problem.

UD Naked gets a lot if good reviews. It's not too heavy but it does not stay on my oily face for anything.

Right now the closest to my revlon colorstay I've found is Lancôme teinte idole but it doesn't stay as well as colorstay.

I thought maybelline superstay was not bad but the color selection is too limited.

My suggestion would be to go to ulta and srphora. I've gotten countless samples at this point. It's hard to go by what works for other people because everyone is so different. My face is difficult and nothing stays well for me!

If you are looking at liquid, I like Tarte's Amazonian Clay. BUT to get the right coverage, I would highly recommend using their brush. QVC has the best deal in that you can get the brush for free. But they also sell it at Ulta and Sephora. I am also a fan of Makeup Forever Mat Velvet which is only available at Sephora unfortunately. I also love both of these because they have never oxidized like MAC and Clinique have. I am also a Bobbi Brown fan.

Yes Kris was helpful with recs when I asked before! I literally just got the Tarte Amazonian clay sample last night. Honestly when I felt it in store before it felt really thick but then I tried putting it on a little on my face and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I haven't tried it out completely though but I have high hopes!!

I tried MUFE matte velvet and didn't love it but is worth a shot. I think the color was really off but there may be a color that worked better but I didn't like the staying power and how it looked.

I'm also just picked up Kat Von D's lock it tattoo foundation sample that I'm hopeful but I think that one and the Tarte one are heavy coverage so depends on what you want. I have a beauty blender that I'm hoping will be able to lighten the coverage some

  • Thanks ladies!  I've been using the same stuff for so long, I honestly have no idea what I'm looking for.  I'm going to look at the ones you both suggested.  Getting samples is a great idea.

So stupid question....Do I just go to Ulta or Sephora and ask for a sample?

The brush makes all the difference. I don't like the coverage when I don't use the brush, it is way too heavy, cakey and thick. I put a dime size amount on the top of my hand and tap the brush onto it. Nice coverage without feeling heavy. A lot goes a long way.

I haven't gotten samples at ulta. I'm not sure if they do or not but the higher end stuff has things out that you can try. I usually test out the foundations on my hand to get a feel for texture and color. I like ulta to just look around and not get bothered. Whereas at sephora I usually have somebody on me right away asking if I need help (which can be good or annoying).

At sephora they are pretty easy to get samples. If I really have no clue what I want I just go in and ask for advice. That's what I did the first time. Told her what my issues were and asked for ideas. She tested out colors and gave me about 4 samples. Other times I've gone in knowing something I want to sample so I just find somebody and say I want a sample of this. The last time I went they used their color IQ thing to match my color and it was definitely off. So if they offer to do that make sure you or they still try the color out on you.

  • I haven't been as happy with bare minerals as I used to be so I've started using Loreal Magic BB Cream in the white tube and then a light dusting of the bare minerals makeup over it.  For lighter coverage I use mineral veil, though you could use any powder to set.  I just had bare minerals stuff I need to use up.
