Florida/Disney/Legoland Questions

So we’ve booked our tickets for spring break and now we have to figure out the rest of the details. We are flying in and out of Tampa. We plan to spend one day at Legoland, two days at a beach near Tampa and one day either at Disney Hollywood Studios (Pixar/Star Wars stuff especially) or Magic Kingdom (Mickey/Epitomy of the Disney World experience).

DH is probably never going to want to spend a week at Disney World unless we spent every other day lounging at the pool. So I figure if we can do a park or two each year, the kids still get the experience and we don’t have a miserable family member. Anyway…

Has anyone here been to Legoland Florida and have any insights to share? Is it possible to get park tickets for Hollywood Studios and/or Magic Kingdom on the day we go or do I have to get them in advance? I haven’t been to WDW since high school, so if you would choose Hollywood Studios or Magic Kingdom I’d love to hear why. If you have any experience with the Tampa area, I’d love recommendations for a good area to stay in, hotels, beaches, etc.

I have done some online searching, but appreciate anyone with first hand experience.

Re: Florida/Disney/Legoland Questions

  • We went to Legoland last year and loved it.  It is a really nice park, and perfect for younger kids.  We were able to get BOGO tickets, so be sure to look online for those because I think they always have them.  We were staying with my parents in Bradenton, so I don't have any recs for hotels or anything else in that area.

    Have fun!

  • We did a week and a half in Orlando in the fall. We spent one day at Legoland. It's about 30/40 minutes from Disney world. I love it. The park itself is gorgeous. It used to be Cypress Gardens, and there are trees/flowers everywhere.

The park is geared to younger kids, and the boys had a blast at the shows, rides, etc.

I found a deal for a free kids ticket with each adult ticket purchased, so I used that and got our tickets in advance.

I know your kids are into Pixar, so they may like HS better. The only Pixar characters at MK are Buzz and Merida. Get a fastpass to Toy Story Mania. There are several shows at HS that are lots of fun. You could also attempt to get them into Jedi Academy. Jackson absolutely loved his experiences doing that. There's also the animation academy that could be fun for the kids. We love the Sci Fi Dine in Theater for lunch.

MK is the traditional Disney World experience, with a lot more rides.

  • Amy, there's a section of Legoland that you'd probably appreciate as an architect. There are replica cities/buildings made totally out of Legos. They are absolutely amazing.

We went to Legoland when we were in Florida last October and it was great.  We went with my sister and all of our kids (ages 7, 3, 4, and 1) and everyone had a great time.  We plan to go back when we go down in May so my husband can see it.  We just got buy one get one free coupons in Keefer McDonalds happy meal recently when they had the lego movie cups.  I saved a few of them (we ate at McDonalds an embarassing amount of times with the house being on the market) so I can probably dig one up for you if you need it.  My sister used to work in the travel industry and lives in Orlando, so let me know if you have any specific questions and I can pass them her way.

  • Just a tip to look into a multi day disney pass anyway. They're cheaper per day the more days you go, so if there's even a chance of an extra day or 2 in the Disney parks it's good to consider.

  • And even though the kids are big on the pixar side of disney..... I feel like you have to do Magic kingdom. Well you don't HAVE to.... but when in Rome. :)
  • hmm....for me personally, I would choose Magic Kingdom, BUT my kids are younger.  I do think based on what you've said, your kids will love Hollywood Studios!

I didn't realize they'd turned Cypress Gardens into Legoland! Cypress Gardens is gorgeous:)

I grew up near Tampa and that's not a terrible drive to make from there to Orlando.  When we went for a visit a few years ago we stayed in Pass-a-Grille beach (near St Pete beach) and it was nice. It's down the road from the Don Cesar hotel, which is fun to see (it's the big pink hotel). If you don't mind a bit of a drive from Tampa - hands down the most gorgeous beach is Siesta Key in Sarasota. Anna Maria in Bradenton is also pretty (next to it is Coquina Beach where I spent many hours as a kiddo digging up coquinas (little tiny clams). In Tampa, the Museum of Science and Industry was always a fun place to go. Have a great trip!
  • Also, if you have a Carnegie or Children's Museum membership, the Orlando Science Center is free. Bradenton's manatee aquarium and St. Pete Children's museum are also free.

The Tampa and central florida zoos have reciprocality with Pittsburgh's membership as well :)

  • They do have a lot of Star Wars stuff at HS. We accidentally went on May 4, which was apparently May the Fourth Be With You Day. Big mistake on our part! My kids aren't into that stuff, so they didn't enjoy HS much at all compared to WDW.

We only did a partial day in Hollywood Studios, but enjoyed the park. Basically we went in right away and got a fast pass for the Toy Story Midway Mania ride. Which got us on the ride after our dinner reservation. then we went back and did the little mermaid ride, and starwars (which I believe kev and EJ got right on. I passed on that one but EJ loved).  Eleni loved watching the Jedi training but I don't think she would have wanted to be any closer to Vader. it is fun though. She made her own lightsaber too- but they also have a build your own droid in the gift shop too. the honey I shrunk the kid thing was closed by the time we walked past it.
we ate at the 50s prime time cafe, and I really liked it!  the decor was way my style and I enjoyed the food too! smores for dessert! We enjoyed the muppets show too.

That all being said, I think we did more in magic kingdom.  More rides, more characters, and I preferred it to HS.  But Animal Kingdom was perhaps my personal favorite park of the bunch.
  • Me too, Amanda, I loved AK!
  • I saw an Amazon Local deal posted yesterday for legoland.

if it doesn't pull up for you, change the city to Tampa.
