OOP for IVF question

So, I faxed in my IVF meds request this morning... Can't believe this is really happening already!

I just had a quick question for my fellow OOP ladies about how you financed your IVF cycle(s). I'm sure there are many of you who are far more responsible than myself who saved up and just paid cash (which I am jealous and super proud of you!), but I'm curious about any others who have used other methods of payment. We are looking at applying for a loan through MedicalFinancing.com, but I don't want to get screwed either. Are there any other programs out there that anyone else has used with success?

Re: OOP for IVF question

  • I am not at IVF, nor would I be OOP entirely. But, my RE's office offers discounted programs for those who are OOP. I think IVF is $6000 + meds.

Does your clinic offer anything like this?

I wish I had more advice, but good luck!

  • My clinic offers a discount, but even that is around $11,000 for almost everything (excluding meds). Total OOP is going to be around $15,000, which we don't have cash for right now (only have about $4000). I wish that I could save up and pay cash, but since my AMH continues to decline, we're more interested in getting moving now, rather than waiting another year to save up.

  • We put it on credit cards (to get the points for travel, etc) and then paid it off with money from our savings. I also have a health savings plan, where I could get reimbursed with money that I had saved up.   The money from the health savings reimbursement then went back in our regular savings.

  • Err- let's see.  We put as much in the HSA as possible that year, and I took out a 401K loan.  At least I am paying back the interest to myself for the IVFs that didn't work.

  • No experience with IVF.  But when we looked into the next steps and being 100% OOP, our office told us there was a 10% discount for paying with cash.  However, all procedures had to be paid in full beforehand and they did not offer financing.

Not sure if they work with IF, but you could look into Care Credit.  They will sometimes have promotions for 0% financing for 12-18 months depending on the cost.

  • We could have used our savings or cash flow from our business to pay up front but it would have been very tight. Instead we put it all on credit cards then transferred the balances to 0% interest rate cards. So in the end we had 2 cards with 10k each with 0% financing for 18 months. They are both almost paid off now and if we would have gotten into trouble with the cards we would have paid them off right away but this worked for us. It gave us time to pay everything off and didn't cost any additional money.

  • We pulled money out of savings. Our hospital did offer payment plans, but it has to be paid in full before starting treatments. There are companies (I used ARC) that do savings plans or discount programs.

  • Our clinic requires ins approval or payment up front. If we do another cycle, we will be almost 90% OOP. We have savings for this. It sucks (I'd rather spend money on an addition to our house and be able to get pg naturally), but we have to do what we have to do.

I've been "over there" in the past, and just really like the TN GP board better. :) Plus, I've already ordered my meds, and I don't think I could be considered a regular enough poster over there in time for this cycle anyways. I'll keep that in mind for the future though, for sure. Thanks!

  • Thanks for all the info ladies. I definitely have some homework to get done this week. DH is going to meet the new RE later this week, and then on we go…

P.S. Has anyone ordered their IVF meds internationally for a discount? My new RE's clinic recommends one in particular, and I know that it saves a ton of money, but it just feels weird. Thoughts?

My clinic wouldn't allow it :(  But scour the internet for coupons before you do order.  Folistim had some floating out there when I was cycling.
