The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, AR Level 4?

I checked out a copy of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer from the library and there is a sticker labeling it AR level 4. Is there anything that could be other than accelerated reader?  I don't have a great understanding of AR but does the level loosely correspond to grade level?  This book being labeled AR level 4 seems off to me.

ETA: Okay, so I did some more reading and understand there's a combo of things at play here like interest level etc.  I looked the book up and it really is an AR level of 4.  I suppose the library just labels all AR books, seems flawed though because a child who is reading at a level 4 may see that sticker and grab this book and I don't think it's appropriate for a 4th grader or someone younger reading at a higher level.

  • I have no idea what the AR rating is, but I will add that I love this series.  It is definitely not for a 4th grader, though! :)
    Books Read in 2016: 4/50

  • I am loving it too! Only got 5 hours of sleep last night because of it :)

I keep meaning to read this one!

We don't label our library's books with AR levels, but we get asked to look them up on the AR Bookfind website often. In my experience, most kids and parents seem to care only about the reading level and how many points it's worth and totally ignore the interest level.

It makes me sad when I see kids pass up other books that actually sound interesting to them because they are the "wrong" reading level or not enough points.

ETA: The kids at my previous library told me they figured out how to cheat on AR quizzes anyway so they wouldn't have to actually read the books. SIGH.

    Y_L, Completely agree.

S_L, have that same problem at my school last year. So frustrating! I've worked with some teachers that where WAY over the top with it and would punish students for not reading the "right" books or meeting AR goals.

Way to get kids hooked on reading!  #-o
