Fitness Post!

Okay, I have been slacking for long enough.  Warmer weather is fast approaching (at least I f*cking hope so! lol) and I need to stop being such a slug.  Has anyone been in the same rut as I have been?  I need some motivation!!

Yesterday I did Week 5 Day 1 of the Couch to 10k program, which was to run 5 minutes/walk 3 minutes, three times.  I did it, but I really struggled.  I plan to repeat that day 2 more times this week, and hopefully fit in some Pilates or something like that.

Also, in addition to me becoming completely inactive this winter, I have been eating whatever the hell I want.  My goals for nutrition are to try and eat "cleaner", get into the habit of packing my lunch, eating breakfast and 2 healthy snacks a day. I've been doing pretty well with that so far, and am hoping to keep that up.

Re: Fitness Post!

  • I'm slowly getting out of the rut. I've done MUCH better the past couple of weeks as it's gotten warmer here and there - so I think that does help!

I have a 5K at the end of April, so I've been just trying to get ready for that. I use the elliptical a couple of days and if it's a day I just don't feel like doing that or running on the treadmill, I've used a bike. I figure every little bit helps. I've been shaving time off of my mile and am really pleased with how it's been going. Now to just translate that to running outside ;)

Eating - I can always improve there. I have taken the big step (for me) of including salad in my diet. Anyone that knows me knows I h.a.t.e. salad. But I've found that I do okay with spinach. So instead of going and getting a hamburger or pizza, I've been trying to go to the salad bar instead. Baby steps:) I'm hoping with the opening of farmer's markets - I'll be more inspired by the fresh fruits/veggies available.
  • For the month of March WW is doing a fitness challenge, where if you are active for 4 weeks then you get a fitness charm.  That has helped keep me on track - even though it's just a junky charm.  HA!

I'm down 8.5lbs since I started WW. I also think I've lost inches because my clothes are fitting a lot nicer and are looser and I'm chubby enough that 8.5 lbs wouldn't make that much of a difference on me.  I wish it was coming off faster, but this past week was the 9th week I weighed in, so I've been losing about a pound a week, which I know is what is recommended.  And I can tell that it's been more of a lifestyle change than a quick diet where you drop weight fast and then when you eat for real again, it comes back on.   We went to Red Robin on Sunday for my free birthday burger and I haven't felt right since and I only ate half of it (and a bite of the 2nd half so I wouldn't take it home).  So I think that's a sign that I've made positive changes in my diet.

Last week I worked out 4 days, which I was happy with.  This week I probably will only make it to the gym twice - and I'm going to try to get on the treadmill at home the other days.
  • Ugh - me!  I've got the half marathon in 40 days and my longest run in months was a 5 miler on a random nice day two weeks ago.  I've been swimming laps here and there but I need need need to get back to running.  I don't know why I've been a wimp this year when I ran all thru the cold last year.

  • I've been slowly, but surely, getting back on track.  I'm aiming to do the 30 day shred 3 days a week (even though I think the actual program recommends 6 days-that's never going to happen for me right now, so I know to keep my standards realistic!) and pilates 1 day a week or so.  I'm supposed to be doing a 5K this Saturday and when I signed up, I thought for sure that the weather would be better by now to get back into running, but um, yeah...that hasn't happened.  I literally have not been running since October so this saturday should be fun!

we've also made a better effort to watch what we're eating at home.  over the winter, we'd fallen into the habit of snacking pretty much every night while we watched TV...you know, the thing they say is the absolute worst to do?  that was us.  and not snacking on fruit...no, no, it all started around Halloween when we had candy, the candy turned into christmas cookies, cookies turned into a seemingly endless supply of birthday cake or treats from other events, etc.  we've vowed to be done with it!

  • I too have stepped back into the healthy habits club. So far I have calorie tracked the past week! I have yet to start any type of running/exercise. but that is my next goal to get a routine going again.  This coming weekend is my girls weekend away so I will eat all the things, so I don't expect that i will notice any changes for another week or so.  but my pool opens in like 8 weeks!
  • I've been on and off slacking but have been getting better. My gym changeover has been less than streamlined! Confusion over class times, etc. they made some changes to my Zumba classes which was annoying. But I also have access to their other club so I've been going to both.

I'm trying to get in 3 Zumba classes a week and a few days using the elliptical. Running though hasn't happened much. This weather is killing me!! There was one nice day a week and a half ago and I went for a real run. Wasn't my best running but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The weather was perfect for running (except all the puddles of melted snow). I was so happy to be out there. I really do miss running!! I figured I would be able to get more runs in March. I can't believe I haven't with this terrible weather. There's a May 5K I want to do but really need decent April weather so I can get out there!

  • I finally started running outside again on the trail by work last week. I did the elliptical pretty faithfully during the winter, but that first run outside always kills my legs.

I'm working on getting up the the 10K I need to do for the marathon relay. My longest elliptical "run" so far has been 4.5 miles, so I have another 6 weeks to get the rest of the way there.

I eat like crap much of the time, and I'm looking forward to my CSA starting up again to have a better selection of fruit and veggies for the spring/summer :)

  • Well I am not on track but being 33 weeks pregnant I have been trying to walk in the neighborhood when it was warmer. My legs are so stiff and mad at myself I didn't keep some basic program going. I am also looking to find a race maybe in the fall to sign up for (5K) that will get me motivated once I can get back on the treadmill etc. I am going to try and BF again for longer than with Madi. Need to read up about running/exercise and BF (god I hope that doesn't make me sound really stupid, I am just not sure if there are limits etc.) :)

    Keep it up girls!!

Nope, no limits.  Just whatever you and your boobs feel up to.   ;)   The only difference would be ensuring you have a very supportive sports bra and timing your exercise around the feeding/pumping schedule.

  • Caron-ditto Erin, I would just add to make sure you stay well hydrated before and after, too!
