A (maybe) stupid question about these settlements?

Will libraries get a giant check too or does the distribution/purchase work different for them?

I'm sure that they are buying in bulk, so probably not paying retail?

I just know that our library is hurting for money and I'm hoping that these settlements mean money in their pockets as well :)

Unfortunately no.  According to the website set up specifically to distribute info on the settlement (https://ebooksagsettlements.com/), one of the FAQs specifically states that:

    2. Only individuals are included.  Business, governments, libraries, non-profits, and other entities are not included.

  • Woo hoo- I am so excited for my credit today!  Much bigger than I thought it would be!

    Bummer :(

I'm still annoyed that libraries have to rebuy ebooks after x amount of borrows.

Our library cut their hours significantly starting January 1st and I'm still bitter about it.

I know- that seems crazy to me too but I get it from the publisher's standpoint too.

  • It's after like 26 borrows. I feel like paper books have to last longer than that? Maybe I'm off, but I see books at the library that have been in circulation for like 40 years.

This is one of the reasons why it's faster at my library to reserve/check out a paper book than an ebook.  Which makes no sense, mine is the library that is always running out of space.  (There was a big deal a while back about them tossing perfectly good books that are still relevant because of a variety of reasons.)  Expanding the ebook selection seems like an ideal solution.

Same here.  The wait time is SO much less for physical books.  I'm obsessive about returning both physical and ebooks when I finished, and I don't think everyone is.  I think a lot of people wait until they expire and let them return that way.

They're trying to figure out how long it will take the digitized version to degrade.

Paper books can last a lot longer than 26 checkouts, so the number they chose just seems random. And if the spine starts to fall apart, often we can just repair it and put it back on the shelf rather than buying a new copy.
