What size cake?

Would you get to serve 7 kids (under age 5) and 15 adults.  So 22 people.  The Giant Eagle chart says 1/4 sheet cake serves 15-18 and a half sheet serves 30-36.  That's a pretty big gap.  I don't want a crap load of cake left over, but I want to make sure I have enough.

Re: What size cake?

  • I vote other and get 30 cupcakes from Sam's Club ;) In all seriousness, I think 1/4 would be okay. I want to say I worried about this before as well but 1) not everyone eats cake, 2) kiddo pieces would be less and 3) I think they are generous with the sizing of the pieces in the estimate (though I could be wrong).
  • Half, they base that on tiny squares of cake. We get a 1/4 at work for 8 people and there isn't a whole lot left.

  • I normally make cupcakes but I got this edible picture https://www.etsy.com/transaction/187770506?ref=fb2_tnx_title and it needs to go on a cake.

1/2. We had about that many for dd's bday party last year and year before and I went with a half. You can cut decent size pieces and you won't be stressing about not having enough.

We definitely have leftovers, but 1/4 wouldn't have been enough. I have thought about ordering a 1/4 and an 1/8 so we would have less leftover. But the cost works out to be similar and in the end I'd rather have extra than worry about not having enough.

  • a 1/4. We do half a sheet for 40+ people and still have some left.  Kids don't eat a ton of cake & some adults don't eat it either.

  • I guess I should add that everyone at our parties eats cake! I don't think anyone turns it down! And we give kids big pieces...that's the fun of bday parties ;-P

  • Probably a 1/4 would work.  Esp with 7 of the people being kids, you can cut their pieces smaller.  Unless you know you have quite a few people who will want a giant honking piece I think you'll be fine.  (My dad likes a giant piece of cake, so he probably counts for like 3 people, ha!)
  • Are you going to GE to order the cake? If so, the cutting diagram is on their box. Just ask if you can see it. I will also say I love cake and so do the people coming to our parties so a quarter would never work for 22 people. If you don't have cake eaters, it would be fine. The almond vanilla cake is fantastic.

  • Ah!  You guys are killing me!  lol.

I am getting it a GE.  I didn't know they have a cutting diagram.  I might stop by and look at that.

  • I don't like cake, so leftovers would end up as trash so I would go with the 1/4 sheet cake, and maybe add a half gallon of ice cream. Cause ice cream>cake. :)
  • Amanda's vote doesn't count.
    :P

We had a similar size party at my house last year for Jake and went with the 1/2 sheet cake....there was maybe 6 pieces leftover?  I would have cried if there were no leftovers though, so I would rather get a bit extra :)

  • Oh, and 2 inches by 2 inches for a slice of cake, that is just wrong.

I feel like we have a good nest debate going here, ha!

What's with you non cake eaters at parties and those that eat it only want 2x2 slices
    ;-P

My grocery store says 15-18 slices for a 1/4 so IMO that would not work for us. I always assume everyone will want a piece. I would feel bad if we ran out.

And the more leftover cake the merrier. I LOVE leftover bday cake from our grocery store (yum!).

  • 2x2 is smaller than a post-it.  I don't cut giant pieces, but I'm also not running a Costco sample table.

  • Get a 1/2, always order more just in case. Giant eagle also sometimes sells individual ice creams or sherbets, I get these for the kids birthdays so we don't over buy ice creams
