Washing pillows?? (not bed pillows)

So I have these basic square pillows that we toss on our couch. No zippers to remove a cover, etc. They feel likw a microfiber material, all one color, no fancy decor. With two little ones running around they see A LOT!

Anyone ever toss this type of pillow in the washer?

I have 4 and considered washing 2 so that if they are ruined, I won't lose all of them. I'm also not super attached to them but since the kids are young, I don't really want to replace them yet.

  • I have a maroon velvety pillow and a white cotton one that the puppy dragged into the yard. Figuring they were both ruined anyway, I threw them in the wash on the gentle cycle and into the dryer for 20 min on low (didn't know if they would explode). Somehow it worked and I have clean pillows to put out when the puppy is better trained.
  • Microfiber is very easy to spot clean - unless a liquid penetrated the material completely (unlikely with microfiber) and got into the pillow stuffing, you shouldn't need to throw the pillow in the wash - in fact, doing so with microfiber will ruin the material.  I found this blog post very helpful - http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2013/05/how-to-clean-a-microfiber-couch-or-sofa.html
  • I have and luckily they have come out great. Sometimes depending on the pillow I have to go back and kind of refluff with my hands. But with little dogs that love to play in the mud & sometimes run to the couch before I catch them to clean them off and a husband who drools when he falls asleep on the couch, I'm grateful that they come out as good as they do.
  • I ended up washing them and they look great! I used a delicate/hand wash cycle. One had a sour milk smell and it washed out great.

  • They sound really similar to our couch pillows that I throw in the washer and dryer at least once a month.  They are micofiber (feel like suede).
