NBR: TV & Internet Services

I am so sick of paying a ridiculous amount for both of these services. I very rarely watch TV and when I do it is usually the 1 or 2 shows that I DVR. We are really considering going to basic cable or maybe 1 step up. I have considered doing the Hulu or Netflix thing, but I would have to switch internet providers since we have Verizon and they charge for data. I'm not opposed to switching though, if it turns out to be cheaper. What do you guys use for these services? Are you happy with it?

  • Comcast (Time Warner).  I hate the cable service, but the internet is fine.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • We use Comcast. We have internet and basic cable.  We use Netflix for the rest.  I hate Comcast with a fiery passion, but we don't have FiOS in our area and we don't really want to go with DISH.

  • We use TimeWarner too. There's not a ton available here and the price isn't too bad.

We've been traditional tv free (we don't have a TV, but have an enormous computer monitor that we use :) )for a long time. I don't love hulu plus and we only used it for the free trial, but we have netflix and are prime members so we have the Amazon service, whatever it's called. We also have an Apple TV which kind of organizes everything and makes it easy to watch what we want to watch. I love it.

  • We switched out internet from broadband (Cox Communications) to DSL (CenturyLink) when we went with satellite TV.  It kind of sucks, but I really only notice it because I work from home - if I just needed it for phone wifi and occasional internet browsing, it would be fine.

We have a local cable service with the most basic of basic cable (which we barely watch) and some kind of internet, and we pay a grand total of $56/month.  Mostly, we watch Netflix/Amazon streaming.  I've been arguing for shutting off cable altogether again, but baseball season is less than a week away, and cable is the only way we can watch the Red Sox.

ETA: When we shut off cable a couple of years ago, we went from digital with DVR and everything else to nothing at all, and I didn't even miss it.  I always said I could never live without DVR, but the only time I have missed it at all was when I couldn't fast forward the commercials during the last season of Breaking Bad, because it was the only season that we watched in real time.
  • We had Comcast for both TV and Internet.  I hate them.  HATE HATE HATE.  Their customer service is non existent.  Oh don't even get me started.  (I was 9 months pregnant, THREE times they were supposed to come out and fix our completely broken internet and no one showed.  Then told me there was no one available for me to talk to when I called for the millionth time.  I.  Went.  Ballistic.  ANYWAY.) We switched internet to AT&T but have no other option with cable except for Dish which is a PITA with our association.  We have basic cable and a DVR and it still is ridiculously expensive.  Did I mention I hate Comcast?   If we weren't such sports freaks we probably could get rid of TV all together.

  • Is it ridiculous that I have no idea what we have.  My husband takes care of all things TV and internet.  If it were up to me I would have basic cable and I would still be using dial up for the internet (which is exactly what I was doing up until 2005, when I moved in with the hubs.)

  • We have FIOS.  I have no complaints, and haven't interacted with their customer service other than the original installation.  We're able to write off a pretty big chunk of the cost of internet/cell phone because we both have home offices.

  • We have internet and Netflix only, no cable. We only have two options here- Comcast or AT&T. While I don't particularly love Comcast, AT&T Uverse was the devil. I've never had more issues with cable (we used to have them combined) in my life. It was so godawful, I actually had to get into the reports for the internet usage and prove to the guy on the phone that we were having issues. Apparently "not working" isn't a good enough reason for them to come look. They also like to "lose" equipment in the mail.

  • We have AT&T U-verse for internet.  It's new to us, but it's way better than what we had.  We just use an antenna for TV.  We get all the basic channels, and it's free.  You can't beat free.
  • We have Windstream internet. It's not always the fastest, or the best, but for the price we pay we get pretty good speeds. We have Netflix, and we use that for a lot. I also watch shows on Hulu, just the free version.
We don't have any type of cable, and we haven't for almost 3 years. We don't miss it.

  • We have Time Warner for cable and internet, we were hoping to be able to switch to DirectTV when we moved but we can't have dishes where we're moving.  I think it's crazy expensive and we have to have cable for work at the very least.  If ComCast does get authorized to buy Time Warner we're probably going to drop TV.

  • We have Comcast, and hate how much they charge. We would love to get rid of it and just use HULU and Netflix, but we just can't part w/ it.

On a happy note, DH called them last night P.O'd about our last bill and we got a deal that includes 1 year free Starz! WoooHooo for Outlander!!!

  • I just can't imagine life without cable. I spend a crap-ton on it, but I live by myself and would prefer not to spend all that TV-free time alone with my thoughts.

  • We got rid of cable. We have Cox for internet/phone and bought Rokus for our TVs to stream on (Hulu plus, Amazon). Very happy we did this.

  • We got rid of cable this past summer. We got a tivo box and use that to dvr local channels and we have netflix and hulu. There have only been a few times I've missed having cable. Is still need to figure out how to get starz to watch outlander.

I have never heard a single person say they are happy with their cable service.

  • I haven't even heard of a lot of these service providers. We have Charter internet and we stream Netflix through our bluray player.

  • We have Comcast as well and I hate them!! We used to have 2 DVR boxes and at least one of them would always be acting crazy so we went to basic cable in the bedroom and might make that move in the living room if they don't knock it off with the crappy service. DH is a huge hockey fan so we have a super expanded cable package so he can watch his favorite team, however we just bought an Apple TV and found out you can get the same hockey package to stream thru that. You can also hook up your Netflix and Hulu thru it. So we have been playing around with that a bit. We are waiting to make the full leap away from cable until after hockey season or as soon as the Comcast/Time Warner deal gets approved. Having dealt with both of them separately I can only imagine the monster they are going to be combined!
