PCOS Question (kind of BR)

My sister was diagnosed with PCOS before getting PG with her third baby. That baby is now a year old and my sister is having a hell of a time with her stomach. No mater what she does, she loses weight everywhere and her lower stomach stays the same.  She's read that PCOS can cause this kind of thing.

Have any of you had an issue with "bigger" lower stomach with PCOS and have you had any success with meds, vitamins, etc?

Thanks <3

Re: PCOS Question (kind of BR)

  • I don't remember what the term was that the Dr called this.  Even when I weighed 135lbs and wore a size 4, I still looked almost 3 months pregnant.  It almost looks like my stomach is constantly swelled, and only in the lower portion.

The only thing I've found that has helped is the Gluten Free diet.  I've only lost a few pounds since starting it, but the swelling has gone down immensly and I'm into a smaller size pants than I was just a few months ago.  I know that's a pretty drastic change to make, but I've trained for half marathons, worked with a trainer, and have done every ab workout possible. The only thing that has made it somewhat less is changing what I ate.

  • I believe that's why they suggest a low carb diet. I'm not 100% on that, though!
  • I think it's related to insulin resistance (why some women tend to gain most of their weight in their abdomen area). I seem to remember that this is an issue with PCOS (although I'm certainly no expert there). A low-carb, gluten-free or similar diet helps decrease the amount of insulin that is circulating, since the glucose is lowered in the body (so less need for all that insulin). That's how I understand things...

Although I don't have PCOS, I definitely carry my weight in my abdomen and always have. The only thing that has ever helped is decreasing those carbs (a lot). Hope that helps!
