Another cake question...

The woman at the Giant Eagle bakery looked at me like I had 2 heads when I said I wanted a half sheet cake with a filling.  Can you not do a filling in a sheet cake?

Re: Another cake question...

  • I have never had a sheet cake with a filling.  Sheet cakes are not very thick and are very wide so you can't really cut them in half. And to layer two of them, well that is a crap ton of cake.  ;)

Ok.  I never knew that.  No wonder she was looking at me like that. lol

I have had filled sheet cakes, but they are always from bakeries (Paddy Cake, Lincoln, Oakmont). They are also thicker than a GE cake. Actually, had some on Saturday at my brother's wedding.

  • I love cake. My sister had a filled sheet cake from the French bakery in Millvale, it was divine.

Definitely! But I go to a different grocery store (and apparently #1 grocery store so they are awesome).

The last few years I have gotten a half sheet cake with raspberry filling. You can get that type of filling or frosting filling. I love their raspberry filled sheet cake! Absolutely no issues. It just costs a little extra. But again different grocery store than GE.

And as Kris said the cake ends up being a little thicker than just a non filled sheet cake. More cake and filling=yum

Ok, so I'm NOT the crazy one!  That's always refreshing to hear.

  • I know you can get filled cakes at Costco.  I believe they only come in 1/2 sheet varieties, with pre-determined designs.  (You still have some choice, but not as much as you would at a grocery store or bakery.)

They are decent, and reasonably priced.  Not my favorite cake, ever, but I am a cake snob.

  • Thanks for all of your help in the great birthday cake saga of 2014.  I should just go back to making cupcakes.

This makes me so glad, I am not a fan of either Costco or Sam's Club cakes at all. But everyone is always raving about how good they are. The only non-bakery cake I like is Giant Eagle.

  • Sam's Club is ok for what you get (which is a lot of cake for considerably less money than GE)  I wouldn't order Sam's for a small family gathering (where I intend to eat the majority of the cake!) but I have ordered it in the past for Jake's bday party with his friends...I hate shelling out tons of money for cake only to watch half of those kids lick the icing and toss the rest.
    :((

My favorite cake is still creative cakes by gwen, near Robinson.  mmmmmmmmm

That's why I'm not slaving away in the kitchen making fun looking cupcakes this time.  I'm not a cake baker/decorator and I don't really enjoy doing it.  And then it KILLS me to see how much ends up in the garbage.

  • You're definitely not crazy! I get my cakes from Lisa (jefsnickerdoodle) and always do a half sheet with filling. Her cakes are SO good, a lot of our guests have had her do cakes for them afterwards.
  • I love the Costco chocolate cake/filling for a party if I need a large cake.

Lisa's cakes are the best though!!! That's where I get my girls' cakes.

  • I will have me one of Lisa's cakes some time. :)
  • I have had sheet cakes from ge with filling. They are a little bit more expensive but totally doable.

I know!  Everyone does rave, and I'm just "Eh."  Don't get me wrong, I'll eat it!  It is cake, after all, but given a choice, I would make my own, or purchase from a bakery.  My co-workers got me an Oakmont Bakery cake last week.  Delicious!!!!
