WIJFR: Girl of Fire and Thorns (sp)

Loved, loved, loved it! What a journey Elisa takes.  She begins the story by hiding behind her feelings and her intelligence, but by the end she's a strong, smart and powerful woman.

I don't really know how I feel about Alejandro.  At the beginning I was hoping he would fall in love with Elisa and that her instincts about Arina were wrong.  They had to be, I couldn't bear Elisa's heartache.  He came through in the end, but he was too weak to make good choices, including with Elisa.

Was Carson channeling GRRM? Killing off wonderful characters? Oh, Humberto.  What a sweet, sweet boy. And now that I've finished, I can see that while he was on the verge of becoming a man, he was still a boy.  He could have been right for Elisa some day, but I don't think it would have worked.  Even if Elisa wasn't queen.

I sought out a small spoiler for the next book and it's KILLING me that I don't have it with me and I have to wait until late tonight to start number two.  I'm getting ready to get number queued up so I can get right on that one too.

Thanks so much for suggesting this @taylormillgirl I loved it! Have you read Alodia's series?

  • I'm so glad you liked it, too! The next books are even better, IMHO.

Alodia's series? I don't think so. I'll have to look into it!

I totally agree. Such a great story and I felt for Elisa so much. I loved seeing her come into her own strength as she got dragged across the desert, and faced trial after trial. And I loved loved loved the part toward the end of the book where she's musing about why she was chosen to bear the godstone, and says that Ximena and everyone else around her was already willing to step up and do what was needed, but she was chosen because she needed it to make her realize she can do it.

I think that there's going to be a love connection between Elisa and Hector somewhere down the line.

And, P.S. is anyone else suspicious of Mara? Maybe I'm totally reading her wrong, but I think she could be some kind of spy. She showed up when other refugees showed up, but didn't necessarily seem to be with them and then volunteered to go to Basajuan to be near Elisa. I don't want to be right though, because I would hate for anyone close to Elisa to betray her.

  • I finished last night!  I really enjoyed it!  I downloaded the 2nd book from the library, I can't wait to start it tonight!  :)

The only thing that bothered me (and it was a big deal) was Elisa's weight.  She kept referring to herself as fat, large, etc... and she definitely appeared to binge several times when feeling out of place or unsure of herself.  I just didn't like that she didn't feel "worthy" until she lost weight.  Or maybe that was just how I read it...

I knew going in that there was a weight issue that some people had trouble with.  I tried to be objective about it because I know I had similar feeling as Elisa when I was a teenager, and I probably ate my feelings a bit to hide my insecurities.

What I did like about it was when she lost the weight, it wasn't intentional.  I knew she probably would lose the weight at some point, but I was curious how RC would accomplish it without it being only about body image.  I like that when she realized it, I didn't feel like it was OMG look, I'm skinny!  She was proud that she was strong, mentally and physically.

I saw it as a control issue. At the beginning of the book, she had an unhealthy relationship with food, using it (and wine) to console herself when she was anxious, angry, upset, etc. As she grew stronger, she became more confident and didn't need to use food as a crutch anymore. I saw her feeling of worthiness more related to gaining control than being thin.
