what would you do re: neighbor sitation

I should start this post by saying that I live in a rural area where each lot is about an acre.  My street is off an 80 km/hr high way and there are train tracks further down my street.

Last Spring a new family moved in with their 2 dogs and cat and all 3 animals are inside/outside pets.  We discovered that the new cat had been peeing in our bushes by the front door and on our cars.  He also peed in my garden and killed my flowers.  The cat still comes into our yard at night as is evident by the tracks in the snow, so I'm sure he poops here too.  Just recently the dogs have been running into our yard and pooping too...while the neighbors were outside.  I also almost hit the dogs when I was leaving my driveway because the owner was letting them run wild.

I want to say something to the neighbors about controlling their pets but I don't want to cause trouble (I think people already don't like us for "wrecking" our yard with a veggie garden, planting trees, not raking leaves or cutting grass).  But I like to walk around barefoot and I don't want to step in their animals feces...nor do I want to deal with the affects of cat pee everywhere.

I know their cat is the one walking though our yard because the other feral cats were eaten by a fox.  Nobody else lets their dogs run free either because of the highway and train tracks.

Should I say somwthing to my neighbors?  And if so, what?  Or am I being dramatic?

Re: what would you do re: neighbor sitation

  • Well geez, between the wild animals and the traffic, your problem might end up solving itself. :P And that's a horrible thing to say because I'd hate for any harm to befall an animal, but I wonder if it would take something happening to one of their pets to make them change their ways.

It's a tricky situation. I don't like confrontation either, especially since neighbor issues have the potential to make life so unpleasant. If you do talk to them, I'd frame it as concern for the safety of their animals so it doesn't come off like an attack on them. Something like "I feel worried when I see your pets outside because other animals in this neighborhood have been hit by cars or attacked by wildlife. Other people in the neighborhood do (x y or z) to keep their pets safe, have you considered that?"

  • I would do something over the top nice, like bring them a basket of muffins or something, and then mention that you are worried about the animals because of the traffic.  You could even make something up like you saw one almost get hit and it scared you.  Tell them you are an animal lover and just worried.  If they're jerks about it then at least you've been as nice as you could be.

I live in a rural area too, and while it's common to have animals roam free, everyone knows you don't let your pets do their stuff in other people's yards.

  • I agree with both PPs.

Some ways to keep the cat out of your garden. Also, I read it's not good for a pregnant woman to handle cat poop... Something about parasites. Since you are ttc, I'd be careful.

Is there a lease law or pick up your pets feces law? We have both in our county so I would nicely let them know of both. Then if the dog is roaming I'd call County.

  • Ok, I give you major credit for being so calm.  About 4-5 years ago we had two dogs get in with our baby goats and they ripped them to pieces.  Honestly, I will never get those images out of my mind.  I knew the second I saw the massacre that it was domestic dogs, because feral dogs/wild animals would have eaten, these took their time.

We did find the owners and did win a sizable lawsuit.  But, I would definitely say something to your neighbors, especially if there are any farms in the area.  It's extremely irresponsible for people to let their dogs run and I get super emotional about it.  You could also call law enforcement to talk to them for you.

As for the cat I would just google: "Scents that repel cats," and see if any of it works.  This is kind of gross but you can buy predator urine at hunting supply and most garden stores.

  • @mana8503 and @seipel12:  I like the ideas on how to keep cats out of the garden.  I'm hesitant to use any urine sprays because I have an indoor cat and I don't want the scents to come in the windows and freak her out.

I'm not sure about feces by laws but the neighbor is actually the CFO for the township...so he should be aware of those laws!  I'll definitely look into the suggestions made.

  • Agreeing with prior posts. We went through a similar situation at our rental house. The house behind ours has two dogs--both of which were basically free roaming and just leaving their business wherever they wanted.

The reason we brought something up was because one of the dogs decided to basically wander down the access road that leads to both of our houses. Had I not been watching where I was going, I more than likely would have hit it.

Since then, they've made sure to keep a better eye on them and make sure they're on some sort of restraints.

Probably wouldn't hurt to at least say something.
