Oh my gosh, I loved these books so so much. I'm not a fast reader at all and I still devoured them all a week and a half because I had to know what happened next with Elisa. Elisa is probably one of my favorite heroines ever. She felt like such a real person all throughout the series, and I have a ton of respect for her and all of the difficult decisions she had to make. l loved that she got the chance to face her final battle after her godstone had fallen out so she would know for sure that her strength and specialness was something that was in her, not just because of the stone.
And Hector--how perfect was Hector for her? I'm not sure why it didn't occur to Elisa to marry herself to him earlier in the story when she was agonizing about strategic alliances while realizing her feelings for him. Elisa was from the north and still had support from her sister and father in Orovalle, so it would have made more sense anyway to ally herself with someone from the south anyway.
I'm so glad I was wrong about Mara being a spy. All through the beginning of Crown of Embers I just kept picking up on little things I thought were hints that she might be an Invierno. First someone mentioned that there were Invierno spies among the Joyans, and then when Mara fell down and her scar started bleeding she there were shattered godstones on the floor next to her I though maybe she was trying to steal them. I got all suspicious, but as soon as they were on the ship voyage together and talking about the ladies' shroud I knew I was wrong.
This series took so many fun twists and turns that I never would have anticipated. The Spanish-style setting was awesome. The only part I felt like I'd seen before in other books was the short section at the beginning of Crown of Embers when she was in the palace in Brisadulce with the court intrigue and power plays, but everything else felt so fresh and unexplored. Was anyone else shocked when she dismissed Ximena? That was sad, but I suppose necessary in the long run. I felt like I was on the journeys across the desert and sea and through the mountains right alongside the characters and that was so much fun. But that ginormous glowing cave scorpion was fuck!ng scary.
I can't wait to see what Rae Carson is up to next.
Re: WIJFR: The Fire and Thorns series (series spoilers)
You've nailed all the good points. I loved the Spanish style, I loved she was able to win the war with diplomacy instead of force and she did it with no super human powers.
Hector was to die for. Hard, but caring. Brooding, but in the I love brooders way! I agree with @taylormillgirl about Humberto. It was harsh, but he had to die. He wouldn't have helped her be as strong as she needed to be. Not in the way Hector was able to.
I wish there was more! I want more from Elisa though I think her story is done. I'm eager to read Alodia's series. I think it would be cool to get another series from the child of Hector and Elisa though. Kind of like Tamora Pierce does with her Tortall world.

I loved, loved, LOVED, this series!!! This was one of *the best* trilogies I've read! When I finished it, I thought "THAT is how you finish a trilogy!" (I'm looking at you, Divergent, Matched, etc...)
I didn't think it was possible but every book was better than the pervious!
