Re: NOTD Friday edition

  • I love William and it's on my long list.

I think Isla is beautiful but I'm not sure that we'd use it simply because I have others I like more. It's on the loooooong list though :)

  • I would put William (and most of its forms) on my list.

Isla is very pretty, but doesn't even remotely work with our last name.

Isla is my youngest stepdaughters name and I actually love it.

Isla is very pretty but I wouldn't use it because I wouldn't want my daughter to spend her entire life having to correct people when they mispronounce her name.

Isla is pretty, but like @OohSparkly13, I don't want to give my child a name she will have to correct people on the spelling/pronunciation of every day of her life.

  • I like William- but we have a few in the family, and our 1st boy will likely have the same initials as H and his father. So it doesn't look likely.

Isla is beautiful, but I'm with the others who would prefer my kids to not fight spelling or pronunciation battles.

  • William is too common for me, and it would not work with my "W" last name. Isla, is a pretty name but we have so many other girl names that we like. Does anyone else have a hard time coming up with names of one gender. There are no boys names that I like....here's to hoping we have girls because I can only say maybe to a few boys names.

  • Ha. William is DH's name, so its automatically on the list for both first and middle names. I'd prefer it as a middle name just because I want our hypothetical son to have his own name, but it is on the list.

Isla is pretty, but NMS. Plus, DH likes traditional names and has vetoed every non-traditional name I've put out there. ~X(

  • I've always liked the name William, but it's DH's brother's name (who we never, ever see and has just gotten himself into way too much trouble in life), so I would not want to use it.

I LOVE Isla. But my sister has already confided in me that it's on their very short list if baby #2 is a girl, so I can't run it by H.

To everyone who wouldn't use Isla just because of the kid having to correct people's spelling/pronunciation: they'll get over it! I had to correct everyone my entire life (still do) when it comes to my name, which was/has been frustrating, but once I hit college, I fell in love with the fact that I have a name no one else does. My name is beautiful, it's spelled correctly for its origin, and my parents taught me the correct pronunciation of my name. I think all those factors totally outweigh the fact that every teacher I had growing up could never pronounce it at first sight.

  • @LuckyAngel07 maybe it's different for a first name. For me, it was my lady name no one could pronounce (or spell if they had heard it.)

It drive me crazy as a child. My first name was never spelled right, but it had family history, so i eventually got over that.

  • I had a first name no one spelled right and a last name that no one could pronounce or spell.

Although I survived and I love my name now, I'll be very cautious in name picking for future children.

  • Oh my last name was an issue, too. I had the total package.

I'm just saying I would never rule out a name just because it would get mispronounced/misspelled by others. I wasn't permanently damaged by no one getting my name right or never finding any personalized souvenirs on vacation.
