need thank you email advice

I just finished a phone interview with the HR person and it turned out that I wasn't fully qualified - yet. I am changing careers so I didn't have enough experience. They had a another position that I could qualify for but the commute would be too much for me and I was honest with her about that.

I really love the company's concept and do hope t work there sometime and told her so. She was great and told me to check back in as things changed for me, i.e. I got some more experience or could do the commute.

I am just a little stuck on the thank you note. Most examples online obviously don't apply to me...

Any advice?

  • Just taylor the thank you to your situation. "Thank you for considering me for x position. I very much enjoyed speaking with you and learning more about this (amazing, interesting, successful...pick a good adjective that reflects them) company. Please keep me in mind if a xyz position become available." If you're not going to work there regardless of the position because of the commute, just end with "if I am in closer proximity in the future, I will be sure to visit your website for any open positions I feel I would be a good fit for." Change the wording a bit for whatever you need. Then the basic thank you again blah, blah. Good luck!

^This.  I would thank the recruiter for taking the time to conduct the interview with you, and for offering you the advice on how to expand your portfolio and work experience.  I would re-iterate to the recruiter that you really like the work environment and concept, and that you are interested in being part of the team in the future.  Let them know that once you have taken his/her advice that you will be back in touch with them regarding available opportunities.

    Best of luck :)
  • Curious - how long is the commute? Just wondering if it's worth sucking it up to get your foot in the door...
