What do you call each other's parents?

I have trouble with this, and I have no idea why. I'd like to call them (DH's parents) mom & dad, but not sure what they want me to call them, and I can't seem to just ask them "what do you prefer to be called?" DH won't call my parents mom & dad, although they've asked him to. My side always refers to the parents as mom and dad, no matter if they're an in-law or not. DH's side always refers to the in-laws by their first name. More than my own personal hang up on this, I'm just curious: what do you call your in-laws?

Re: What do you call each other's parents?

  • I call them by their first names.  I love his mom but I would never be comfortable calling her mom.  My FI calls my mom by her first name.

  • DH calls my parents by their first names. I call both of his step parents by their first names. Sometimes I call his dad, Dad and sometimes I just call him Scott. It's whatever comes out. I feel like he is more than just my FIL though. We are very close. DH's mom I call by her first name or refer to her as "your mother".

  • I call my husbands mom Ms. first name. Sometimes I'll call her mama but more often it's Ms. first name. Hubby calls my mom Ms. C. It's her first name initial.

  • I call mine mom and dad, however; It seems forced. I would be more comfortable calling them by their first names.
  • I switch pretty evenly by calling his mom Ms. first name and mom. I always call his dad by his first name. I think it would make him secretly uncomfortable if I called him dad, although he has brought it up that he wouldn't mind it. He gets uncomfortable about many things LOL
  • I have yet to figure out what to call his father. I can't do first name or dad, it just feels weird. I call his dads girlfriend by her first name. My husband calls my parents (and most of my uncles and aunts and cousins lol) Mr and Mrs. last name (my maiden name).
  • When I'm talking to them I'll call them by their first names.  When I'm talking to DH I'll say "your Mom or your Dad".  For my daughter, they're "Gram and Pap".  When I'm talking to anyone else I'll say "my mother-in-law or my-father-in-law".

DH calls my parents by their first names.
  • I use my in-law's first names. I don't think I could ever call them mom and dad. I also refer to my husband's grandparents by their first names.

My husband calls my mom Mamma B or MJ and my dad used to be Chip but now it's evolved into Chocolate Chip.

On a side note - my husband has two young cousins and the 8 year old calls him Cousin Vince but calls me Auntie Jocelyn lol
