How was your birthing class? Anything interesting?

Re: Amccul

  • I was just about to page you!! thats coming.

the birthing class was good. Ben wasn't into it at all which I expected. the first part was boring and they were just showing slides talking about the different stages of labor. towards the end we did breathing exercises, exercising on the birthing ball, and the husbands had to practice different massage techniques to use during labor.

I did enjoy stuff they mentioned about the hospital that I didn't know. you can dim the lights in your room, wear your own clothes, bring food in with you (just don't get caught eating it:)).

the time went rather quickly too.

our final class is Friday and Ben doesn't want to go.  I half want to make him go, but the other half of me doesn't really care.  We are having a doula at our birth and he said he'd watch as many birthing video's on netflix and so forth if he didn't have to sit through a class again....so we'll see

  • Yeah, DH wasn't too excited about it. Where are you delivering?

  • the only thing that scares me about Christiana is their c-section rate!
  • I didn't know they had a high rate for c-sections. I liked the idea of a high level NICU god forbid it should be needed. I loved my delivery nurse. The only thing I was unhappy with was my room the second night was right next to the nursery. So the nurses were in there talking most the night. Is Ben planning on staying with you?

  • Ben is going to stay with me.

and they don't have the nursery anymore...so that shouldn't be an issue.

I think all will go fine, I just don't want to be pressured into something I don't want like unnecessary meds, pit, c-section...

  • I'm not sure its an official nursery. They told us they didn't have one, but if the nurses weren't super busy, they would keep the babies from the hours of 12-6 am.

I had pit, but I was induced b/c my blood pressure was creeping up.

  • Christiana has a respite nursery. Is that what you're talking about?

I also heard that they are trying to lower their c-section rate because it is so high so they're focusing on other methods of aiding delivery instead of meds, c-sections, inductions, etc.

WOW. That's really high!! I have to assume they must induce a lot.
  • I highly recommend using the nursery if it's open. We used it 2 of the 3 nights and it was nice to have a little sleep. They will bring the baby to you for feedings.

I always thought the c section rate would be more doc specific?  My friend was concerned with me picking AAW because she heard they have a high c-section rate...which out of my friends who were induced by one of their doctors 3 out of the 4 of us ended up with c-sections.  Sometimes though it just really is the only option...in my case, being induced at 42w (he clearly had no plans of coming on his own) and then having his heart beat drop dangerously low, a c- section was the only safe option at that point.
