the orthodondist and my 6 year old??

Anyone else have experience with their young child and the orthodontist yet? I had Jake at the dentist over the weekend for his 6 month cleaning, and they said his teeth look great, they have enough spacing to allow adult teeth to come in, etc...but he has an underbite that needs to be addressed. The dentist suggested we take him to the orthodontist soon, that he probably needs an expander. The dentist was so laid back about it, mentioned it almost in passing, like it's totally normal. Jake hasn't lost any teeth yet, nor does he have his 6 year molars...which I mentioned to the dentist, who said "well, you know...you can't wait until everything comes in...better to get in there for at least a consultation soon" UGH! I'm not ready for this. anyone else have experience with the orthodontist for their kids?

  • Hayden is a little older (will be 8 in a few weeks), but he has been to the orthodontist and currently has braces across his top teeth as well as an expander. He has lost about 8 teeth at this point and there was absolutely no room for one of his permanent tooth to come in, so we had to do something now.

  • Noah just got braces and an expander at the end of March.  The dentist has been talking about him needing to see an orthodontist since he was around Jake's age.  He was waiting to see if Noah would have a growth spurt where his mouth would grow.  It didn't, so he suggested we go see someone.   When we went, the orthodontist did tell us that we could wait until Noah is older if we wanted to - it was up to us.  (Noah will need 2 phases, one now and one when he's 12/13, after all of his permanent teeth are in).   However, we decided to go with both, just because doing something now will allow more room for those permanent teeth to come in.   So, I don't think it hurts (except for my pocket book...if you listen closely you can hear it weeping...and my dental pays 50%!)  to make an appointment now, and see what the orthodontist has to say.  Although I will say there's a lot of things they can't eat/drink and also a lot more brushing involved, so it seems like 6 is a tad bit young for the extra responsibility.  (But what do I know).
  • Ask Maria, I know she just posted on FB asking about orthodontist for O.

  • Wow, I didn't realize they started thinking about orthadontics at such a young age. That conversation would have surprised me too. Right before EJ's teeth started getting wiggly I noticed her jaw grew and all of those little baby teeth looked too small for her mouth. Kev had braces though, so I am crossing my fingers her teeth will be more like mine.
  • No first hand experience - I'm surprised our dentist hasn't mentioned it for Caileigh yet but if he mentioned it when she was 6 I would be shocked.  I would research it alot, its bizarre to me how the orthodontist process works now - phases & starting so early. What changed from when we were young ?
